My parents had one of the gigantic, almost-as-long-as-the-couch stereo cabinets with an 8-track player until the late 1980s. (By the end, it was only used for playing my mother's collection of Christmas 8-tracks at the holidays!)

Once in 1977, she hit the stereo with her Camaro, after driving the car through the wall of the garage and into the living room. Didn't hurt the stereo at all.

(Also, Mom still has a telephone chair at her house!)

I don't like dressers. I always end up in places with small bedrooms, so it makes more sense to keep all my clothing in a closet. (Yes, I put t-shirts on hangers!)

What Piece of Furniture Are You Willing to Do Without?

I'm the new tenant in a five-apartment building, so I've been trying to introduce myself to the people in my building. The ones younger than me (I'm 39; they're probably the adult children of other tenants) seem resistant, but I the real grown-ups aren't bad.

They do tell me weird stories, though. Yesterday, the laundry room, Carol from Apt 1 told me that she and other tenants used to use my basement apartment (which was left unlocked when vacant) as a tornado shelter when the weather got bad!

One day, our buildings senior resident, Al from Apt 2, gave me the rundown of all the tenants who've died in the building since he moved in. Apparently, the previous tenant of my apartment hanged himself in the kitchen. No wonder my rent is so low!

Do You Know Your Neighbors?

I live in a 5-apartment building on a street that's mostly houses. One of my neighbors and I were just complaining to each other that the homeowners around here mow their lawns way too often. Constant lawnmower noise. Now, after reading everybody else's complaints, I don't feel so bad. (Hell, I'm probably the annoying night-owl in my building!)

My pet peeve about my last residence? I was five houses from the end of dead-end street that had a weird knack for attracting drunk drivers and police chases. About once a year, somebody would come barreling through late at night, hit a parked car or two (some of my neighbors didn't even have driveways), then ram into a barrier at the end of the block.

(If it weren't for the barrier, they might drive right into a creek in the nearby park. We also got a lot of lost drivers u-turning in front of my old house in the summer, because a not very-well-placed sign a block away makes everybody think the entrance to the park in on my street.)

I have a similar situation in my new apartment -- a row of Expedits with about 8 inches of overhead clearance. I'm planning to with a line of shoebox-sized storage boxes across the top.

You could do baskets or bins, too, because it looks like you've got more space overhead.

I'm clumsy when I'm groggy in the morning. I would be knocking that stuff over all the time!

I do hang art in the bathroom, but it's cheap art. $10 posters in $20 frames, so if the humidity destroys them, I can afford to replace them.

"[I]t always seem like a shame to buy art."

Why? Do you hate artists?

So, what does he DO with the couch? Sit there and stare at the blank wall? That might be TOO zen!

Right now, the weirdest thing in my living room is a Halloween candy bowl full of dice (sitting on a bookshelf), but I'm still decorating the new place. Give me time!

What's the Weirdest Thing in Your Home?

I live in a small city in Michigan that's too small to rate "city kitsch," but I'm involved in local politics, so I ended up buying a map of election precincts. I recently framed it and hanged in the living room. It's kind of a nerdy form of city kitsch, I guess.

He should install some speakers, so the island can play music from "2001: A Space Odyssey" as it rises.
