Great article! I've run workshops on plant propagation, and I would refer people here in the future.

I really liked the look of the CB2 trunk, but when I went to look at it in the store it was flimsy and cheap. Just a PSA for those of you who would be ordering it sight-unseen.

Thanks guys! I did want to include the view, but it would be very obvious to any Oaklanders exactly where I live, and that gets a little weird.
It's funny you say that, LyonStill- I often hear from guests that it doesn't feel like a bedroom, which is a goal of mine. I suppose it depends what you're used to. In the Bay Area, people have beds in the living room, the hallway, the enclosed porch... rents are such that we've become unfazed by hanging out in a space with a bed.

Thank you! It's a sculpture/poem my boyfriend did when he was in art school. It's about the moment an egg is fertilized, so it's perfect for a biologist's apartment.

As a fellow teeny-tiny dweller and lover of gray- nicely done! I love that counter-height table, it is the perfect thing.

I have this issue with my own tummy- get home starving, wolf something down, become disinterested in my own cooking. I keep string cheese and apples at work- one of each at 4 pm sets me up nicely for the bike ride home without filling me up.

I agree! Sometimes, after a long day prepping media, even cooking with conventional tools feels like taking work home. It's one reason I've procrastinated on buying a kitchen scale. BUT on the other hand, I have hemostats and pipettes in my kitchen drawer- they both come in super handy.

I was waiting for someone to say milk thistle! It's the best, either in liquid or pill form- taken on the schedule you suggest. Greasy food never hurts either :)

Or don't, actually. If too many city folks come over our rents are gonna start climbing.

Around here to 'cupcake' is to put hos before bros- to ditch the people you're with to do some flirting, etc. Not sure of the gang connection, but slang has regional variations.

Gurl, you gotta look into Oakland. Seriously. Lived in three different SF apartments over 5 years, moved to Oakland 18 months ago and couldn't be happier.

@Lyonstill: roops, sorry! Anything 100% linen will do, just search for that. No linen/poly blends.

Where Can I Find Non-Fluffy Towels?? Good Questions
9/20/12 3:50 PM

I'm with you on the towel thing, and with everyone else on the Ikea bandwagon. The only issue is that I have these weird bleach marks on my gray Ikea towels, even though I don't use bleach. Maybe the dye isn't so hot and they pick up whatever's left in the laundromat washer?

But wanted to share a trick my grandma taught me (fluffy-hate is genetic): try linen. Just buy a yard of decent, 100% linen (like this: http://www.fabric.com/apparel-fashion-fabric-linen-fabric-kaufman-waterford-linen.aspx) and pre-wash and dry it, then hem it. It's absorbent, pleasantly scritchy, fast-drying, and very stylish-looking. But I would say start with just one yard, in case you don't like it. If you're not a fan you can always make dishtowels or a tote or something out of the fabric.

Wait, this stuff isn't ubiquitous? I figured it rose into prominence everywhere during the foodie wave of the last few years. The Sandwich Spot in SF does a perfect job of playing creamy, tangy, savory fillings against this sweet crunchy delight. It is my favorite.
