I didn't realize not everyone took their blenders completely apart after every use! I've always done so because that's how I was taught, but the annoyance of cleaning made me avoid using the blender. That's why I was so happy to get my immersion blender for Christmas! It can't do everything a regular blender can, but it makes post-smoothie cleanup so much easier! Also, I second the question about crumbs in the knife block: do you use a knife once and then stick it back in without washing it?

My grandmother emptied a bunch of packets into a bowl and used it to dry my mom's wedding bouquet (sticking the flowers in headfirst).

I don't have kids, but I remember being scared of the public Santas when I was little (then again, I was pretty shy in general). Nevertheless, I was coaxed into someone's lap every year, but I'm pretty sure it was just to tell him what I wanted, since I can't recall ever seeing those photos in an album; my mom probably didn't want to pay through the nose for a picture of me looking uncomfortable, and I don't blame her. We did, however, get a personal visit from Santa at my grandparents' house every year, and we have yearly photos of everyone on his lap (not all at the same time!). So...if you have a willing party, a halfway-decent red suit might be a better investment :)

Pictures with Santa: A Worthwhile Tradition?

My grandmother always washes her hands with silver on New Year's Day to bring wealth in the new year. She also has a pickle ornament that my cousins and I would try to find, but there was no prize or extra present involved, just bragging rights. Being partly Dutch, we also hang our stockings up twice: once on Christmas Eve, and once the night before St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6). And until a few years ago, Santa Claus himself would show up at my grandparents' house on Christmas Eve while my cousins and I were visiting, but my poor grandfather never got to meet him, since he was always in the bathroom when he arrived. :)

I made something similar to that in picture 7, but instead of wire mesh, I stretched a piece of tulle taut and glued it to a frame-shaped piece of cardboard, then slid it into a gold vintage frame (I kept the original frame's insert in case I ever want to use it for photos again). At school, I tacked up a length of exposed camera film and hung some fishhook earrings through the notches on either side. I'll never be able to give up my jewelry boxes, though...there's just too much in them!

Shortly before the holidays, someone sent me a package of window crayons. Since we have a huge mirror in our vanity area, right next to a floor-length one, I promptly decorated and made a variety of mustaches and hats to "try on" in the mirror. These markers look like they'd be neater, though--the crayons are pretty pale and kind of flaky/greasy.
