Love this; especially how it's pretty much instantly adjustable as the kid's shoes get bigger.

We got some LED bulbs from Amazon a few weeks ago and have been pretty happy with them. They are an investment so we really thought about where it made the most sense to put them based on our usage patterns, the light output available, and the type of fixtures we have in each location.

These are the ones we got

It's per piece for the wrap and the snack ones but the flat is a set of three different sizes.

For me it's not about leaving them unattended (my son plays in the playroom by himself a lot) it's that if I'm in the shower I can't necessarily hear him and it would take longer to get to him if something did happen.

How's a New Mom Supposed to Get a Shower?

I have eczema so showering every day is a big no-no which helps. For example, if I know I'm going somewhere Tuesday morning I'll make sure to shower during naptime on Monday. I hate going to bed with wet hair so if for some reason I missed the naptime shower I'll set an alarm for 30 min before my husband is getting up and shower then.

When my son was really little I used the bouncy seat and I expect to do the same with the new baby once she gets here since I figure my chance of being lucky enough for them to both nap at the same time are roughly nil.

I choose organic corn because so much of the corn out there is GMO and organic products have to be non-GMO.

Try freecycle. Some people who cloth diaper (like me) like to use them to store our cloth wipes but since we don't use disposable wipes we have to get them from someone who does.

I think pale aqua is fairly gender neutral. I think you'd have to pair it with a very strongly gendered color like pink to change that. I do like the aqua and white and yellow but I think a lovely soft grey would be another very neutral alternative.

They're right about the baby vs pet gates. Of course it's even cheaper to buy gates second hand (or ideally get them as hand me downs or from freecycle).

I decided pretty early on that eliminating everything I didn't like was going to be more trouble than it was worth. We do employ a variety of tactics on the most egregious offenders though. I've managed to return/exchange a few things but my husbands family always wants our son to open and play with his present right away so that can be hard. Anything with characters I just can't stand (Elmo, Barney, Veggie Tales etc) and can't return/exchange gets freecycled immediately. The huge ride on train my husbands' grandmother gave our son when he was 8 months old and we lived in a tiny condo got left at her house to be his special toy there.

I also have a closet full of toys that are just age inappropriate like the lovely Melissa and Doug tool bench that clearly says 3 and up that my clueless uncle got my son for his 1st birthday. I haven't decided yet whether or not to follow my mothers advice and rewrap them for birthdays and Christmases or just pull them out at an appropriate time but I'm lucky enough to have the storage space to do this in our new house.

This is awesome! We have a useless little hall/foyer space in the basement between the playroom and the TV room where I currently keep the easel but this would be perfect for there when my kids are a little older.

I fully support the buy a shade you like suggestions. I spent hours and hours on the internet looking for something for my daughters nursery before finally ordering something that I liked only to discover that it wasn't plug in after all. Luckily I was able to salvage the situation by rewiring it with an ikea hanging light kit.

Fwiw this is what I got and it was relatively easy to rewire. http://www.missing-pixel.com/Tazana_Stemcell_Egg.htm

Here's what drives me nuts about this. If these children are suffocating against the bumpers than by definition it's not SIDS, it's death by suffocation. Not any less tragic but calling it SIDS is wrong and just confuses the issue(s).

My son slept with me and in a moses basket next to the bed until he didn't fit anymore (this was about 4 months) and at that point he moved to his crib with bumpers and an angelcare movement monitor (we used this in the basket as well). At that point I was confident enough in his ability to move his head (he was born being able to hold it up) and in the monitor to not be concerned about him smothering against the bumpers. When he was starting to stand in the crib we took off the regular bumpers and replaced them with breathable bumpers so he couldn't use them to climb on. The bumpers were absolutely crucial in keeping his pacifiers (which were his only lovey) in the crib where he could get them.

Do they have to be metal and paint? I've certainly seen similar wrapping paper that could be used to cover inexpensive bins.

Even if you don't have a room that proves the point about paint you can always buy testers in the color that he/she wants (that you think is too intense) and the slightly lighter/less intense one you prefer. A good 4x4 foot swatch on the wall is generally big enough to get your point across and still fairly fast to paint.

When my sister was allowed to pick her paint color she picked a super vivid purple out of nowhere and hated it so much my mom and I were painting over it within the year. When I was allowed to pick a paint color a few years later we bought my new bedding first and then chose a coordinating color. I'm not the sort to pick a super intense color anyway but having the bedding to play off of really helped.

I always had calendar art in my room growing up!

Michaels has some great 50% and 40% off deals on frames right now. I ordered a bunch of prints for my daughters nursery the other day and was able to find 8x10 frames that I hope will work for $2.50 a piece ($10 for a pack of 4).

I've been thinking about this lately. I always close and lock the windows in our two year old's room when he is in there alone to sleep but I discovered the other day when I got him after his nap that my husband hadn't locked them. I'm trying to decide what to do about his forgetfulness before something bad happens to our little climber.

@ BritishMummy - sounds about right. Personally I don't understand why people love it so much but that probably has something to do with the fact that the smell makes me nauseous.

I'm not even going to touch the other requirements but I taught kindergarten for years and every student I worked with (all 500+ of them) were perfectly capable of chewing and not choking on anything an adult could chew. If kids are choking often enough to justify that requirement than something else is going on (like a lack of supervision so that kids are running around while they're eating). For crying out loud my 2 year old eats everything on that list!
