We got some LED bulbs from Amazon a few weeks ago and have been pretty happy with them. They are an investment so we really thought about where it made the most sense to put them based on our usage patterns, the light output available, and the type of fixtures we have in each location. For me it's not about leaving them unattended (my son plays in the playroom by himself a lot) it's that if I'm in the shower I can't necessarily hear him and it would take longer to get to him if something did happen. How's a New Mom Supposed to Get a Shower? |

I have eczema so showering every day is a big no-no which helps. For example, if I know I'm going somewhere Tuesday morning I'll make sure to shower during naptime on Monday. I hate going to bed with wet hair so if for some reason I missed the naptime shower I'll set an alarm for 30 min before my husband is getting up and shower then. Try freecycle. Some people who cloth diaper (like me) like to use them to store our cloth wipes but since we don't use disposable wipes we have to get them from someone who does. Ideas for Repurposing Wipes Boxes Good Questions |

I think pale aqua is fairly gender neutral. I think you'd have to pair it with a very strongly gendered color like pink to change that. I do like the aqua and white and yellow but I think a lovely soft grey would be another very neutral alternative. Making an Aqua Nursery Gender Neutral Good Questions |

They're right about the baby vs pet gates. Of course it's even cheaper to buy gates second hand (or ideally get them as hand me downs or from freecycle). 15 Baby Money Traps To Avoid According to Mint.com |

I decided pretty early on that eliminating everything I didn't like was going to be more trouble than it was worth. We do employ a variety of tactics on the most egregious offenders though. I've managed to return/exchange a few things but my husbands family always wants our son to open and play with his present right away so that can be hard. Anything with characters I just can't stand (Elmo, Barney, Veggie Tales etc) and can't return/exchange gets freecycled immediately. The huge ride on train my husbands' grandmother gave our son when he was 8 months old and we lived in a tiny condo got left at her house to be his special toy there. This is awesome! We have a useless little hall/foyer space in the basement between the playroom and the TV room where I currently keep the easel but this would be perfect for there when my kids are a little older. A DIY Flip Down Art Desk Ana White |

I fully support the buy a shade you like suggestions. I spent hours and hours on the internet looking for something for my daughters nursery before finally ordering something that I liked only to discover that it wasn't plug in after all. Luckily I was able to salvage the situation by rewiring it with an ikea hanging light kit. Ideas for Plug-In Ceiling Fixtures for a Kid's Room Good Questions |

Here's what drives me nuts about this. If these children are suffocating against the bumpers than by definition it's not SIDS, it's death by suffocation. Not any less tragic but calling it SIDS is wrong and just confuses the issue(s). News: Chicago Bans Sale of Crib Bumpers |

Even if you don't have a room that proves the point about paint you can always buy testers in the color that he/she wants (that you think is too intense) and the slightly lighter/less intense one you prefer. A good 4x4 foot swatch on the wall is generally big enough to get your point across and still fairly fast to paint. Letting Kids Pick the Paint Color |

I've been thinking about this lately. I always close and lock the windows in our two year old's room when he is in there alone to sleep but I discovered the other day when I got him after his nap that my husband hadn't locked them. I'm not even going to touch the other requirements but I taught kindergarten for years and every student I worked with (all 500+ of them) were perfectly capable of chewing and not choking on anything an adult could chew. If kids are choking often enough to justify that requirement than something else is going on (like a lack of supervision so that kids are running around while they're eating). For crying out loud my 2 year old eats everything on that list! Kids' Lunch Ideas That Are Dairy Kosher, 'Nut Aware' and Non-Choking Good Questions |
