We got THREE of these catalogs - one for me, one for my husband, and one for the previous occupant. I was so overwhelmed and annoyed and felt guilty and sorry for our mail carrier -- even though we had never subscribed to the catalog -- that I didn't open a single one. I called up RH the next day and asked to be taken off their list (all three times).

I would do a single roman shade across both windows in a bright, sheer fabric, maybe with a simple modern trim.

Where is that leather chair from? It's lovely!

We put everything that can't be played with (DVDs, toys, furniture, books, etc. are ok) on a higher shelf.

Also, don't forget some sort of cabinet locks for your bathroom and kitchen cabinets! I don't go all out with the stove/dishwasher locks for our occasional under-18 visitors as our apartment is fairly small and it takes some time to cause trouble there, but you'd be amazed by the magnetic power of a toddler and a bottle of poisonous cleaner/medication/small objects.

Cheerios, crackers, milk, and bananas are also key parts of the toddler diet.

Lovely! Very charming, and fits well in that space without being overwhleming. And I would die for that shoe collection!

This is really cool! But I wonder if all these creative things have functions, or if they're just sculptures? with the exception of the computers, of course.

this is fine for house painting brushes, but if you're using fine art brushes - the expensive kind - dish soap destroys the hairs that are used. disposable brushes are actually just a better way to go.

My holiday is supposed to be R&R, but it will likely be more W-O-R-K, via the internet, from a house a block from the beach. Sigh.

I would go for a light linen or cream duvet cover. See if you can't make it a little bit safari/expedition -- dark wood trunks, dark red kilim pillows with wooden and leather buttons, sisal rugs. Pretty!

Lovely! And I like how it looks good with the brass bed, which is a lovely piece but often hard to fit into a room. And I would never have thought of those color choices, but they look great!

Definitely add color! There's plenty of ways to do it if you don't want to paint, including lampshades and throws and flowers. Consider painting those little nightstands. And add something to the back of the muphy bed so that it's not just a blank space when not in use. Maybe get a large canvas from an art supply store and go to town with a Rothko-like series of color blocks? Ikea even has some large-formate pictures on canvas that can be cut to size and remounted. As long as it's securely attached on all four corners, it should stay on while you're opening and closing the bed.

Also, in the kitchen you should try to paint the backsplash a bright color. I'm thinking maybe turquoise blue, and then you could fill in that blank shelving area with colored glass pieces in blues and greens.

Same goes for the desk area-- paint the background a bright color, get a bright colored pad for the chair or even paint it. Hang some artwork behind the desk space so it looks like part of the room even when open. Add a bulletin board or chalkboard squares to the back of the door for notes or postcards or other items. And add more brightly colored pillows/throws to the bed!

Finally, in the bathroom i'd just go to town with old hollywood glamor. Could you tape off and paint squares in the area above the bathtub so it looks like molding? And if you can, I would replace the mirror with something bigger (maybe framed with an ornate wooden frame painted silver?) And change the light fixture if possible.

But it looks like such a cute little place! Congrats!

Ugh. I've had many many people extol the virtues of naps to me over the years, but I have the same problem as many people here... I can never fall asleep when I try, unless it's 7 or 8 at night, in which case when I wake up I'm too groggy to actually do anything post nap.

Apartment Therapy Chicago | Good Questions: How to Achieve this Tile Effect?
1/23/09 1:32 PM

I would try linoleum but it honestly wouldn't be too hard to achieve. all you need is three colors of tiles in the same size square. Imagine the trapezoid shapes as two triangles, each made from cutting another square tile in two diagonally. Print the picture out and draw a gride on it based on the sides of the squares and you will see it pop out at you -- the darkest tiles go in wholed, and each of the other squares is a light triangle plus a dark triangle. While there might be seems, you would still get the effect with not much more labor than putting down normal square tiles.

moroccan but add some COLOR!!! Cheerful reds and oranges and yellows would go a long way, or maybe turquoise and teal and bright green if you're going for a beachier look. You need colorful toss pillows, blankets, art, glass, etc. Maybe throw in a bright tuquoise coffee table to brighten up the room and go from there?

i'd paint the back a light fun color (maybe a light blue or pink) that won't mess with the colors too much, make uniform hangers, and put your sweaters on those shelves, so the boxes go up top.

also, yes, certainly, organize. i have dresses and suits in one part of my closet (work/special occasion) and on the other side, pants, then skirts, then long sleeved shirts (color then white), short sleeved (color then white), no sleeved (color then white) and sweaters stacked on top.
