I bought some Ben and the fumes nearly killed me - did I get a bad batch?

Wow, no Sherwin Williams?

I LOVE Aura and did splurge on it for my living room - and it was worth it. But I can't do that again. So, SW just had their 40% off sale and I bought some emerald paint (their version of Aura) - haven't tried it yet, but am disappointed it didn't make the list.

Behr? Really? Though I do use it for crown molding.

This confirms it! Back to the 70s. I loved the 70s so this is great, IMO.

I could not love this more. In fact I'm saving it - already wanted soapstone and white cabinets, but my kitchen looks much like their before pic.

Fine way to go!

On a sad note, I believe the house in the top photo - with the kids about to fall off the wall and die, has been destroyed. Several in the NC triangle have been demolished, but there's a group that tries to save them.

I always tell anyone working on my house that they're free to use the bathroom but I hope that they will just pee in it. Only once did a mover take a crap, and it unfortunately smelled up the entire small apartment, and it was very uncomfortable for all involved.

Toilet down, always.
I prefer not to see a toothbrush in the bathroom at all, because even with the lid down things still apparently spray out (or so they told me on tv). I solve this at home by keeping my toothbrush in the guest bathroom, but if I had guests over I would just keep it in my bedroom.
No carpet! I grew up with bathroom carpet, always repulsed.

One that I find particularly awful: my parents never would flush at night. I was the first one up and would go into the one bathroom to an unflushed toilet filled by several people. I would want to vomit every morning. My understanding is that it was initially done so as not to wake up the whole house. Sorry, but I'd rather wake them up for a moment than make them vomit.

My mother still does this and did it when she stayed with me for a week. I told her the house rule is flush ALWAYS.

I still hate brass but all of these examples look better than the 80s brass in my house.

I never did, only because repainting was the last thing I wanted to do at move out - I was always rushed to finish packing on time.

Agree. My house is just under 1100 sq feet, and I've previously lived in places half the size. I do wish I had a third bedroom - I'd sacrifice my large living room and huge master BR for that - but other than that, the size is fine for me. I like small house, large yard.

These are great. Similar to the first comment - check for roaches too. And roach egg sacs. I live in the south - this is a must. Open all drawers.

Saw a great 30s vanity at a flea market but saw a cockroach egg sac in the cabinet. No thanks! I guess you can exterminate, but most pieces aren't worth it to me.

Ooh, love this. Saving that last picture of the bathroom vanity so I can recreate it. I have a black vanity cabinet (needs to be painted again and want to redo the rest). I have a problem in that I have one of those big fiberglass shells for a bath/shower, though. IN BEIGE.

I love this sweet little apartment. And it's so sunny! And SF is the greatest. Looks like you actually have a lot of storage in the kitchen.

This is SO much nicer than my studio in Manhattan was.

Fay, there's no reason that the neighbors have to TEXT them. I'm all for communication between neighbors, but constant texting is a load of crap. I'd block that in a heartbeat.

I've been on both sides of this one. That they complained to you about the sound of your toilet running tells me they are TOTALLY irrational and need to go. I think you should send your landlord a letter or email detailing it - make sure it's in writing, not on the phone. landlords sometimes don't want to be involved in this type of dispute but he or she can suggest other remedies (fortifying their ceiling ?) and at least will know details about the situation.

Really, the upstairs neighbor has the upper hand just by virtue of acoustics. I'd block their number too. If they start banging on the ceiling, bang back.

My former downstairs neighbor used to do this constantly; once I tripped on my rug and fell and she complained to the landlord. I told him I would rather have NOT fallen on my floor but I'll take it into consideration. Same neighbor left her dog alone for most of the day and he howled for many hours. She eventually got kicked out.

grammarpolice, I didn't think it was obvious that it was a part time job. We're not jealous or overly snarky, but instead are providing counterpoint. In my company someone who would only work part of the day just wouldn't work out - or more likely, the person would end up working past midnight to get everything done (I've seen this, and they eventually quit out of pure exhaustion). It's GREAT when it can work but it shouldn't be presented as something as easy as it is presented here.
