Today as I was checking in at AT I wondered to myself why I keep AT on my blog list.....this post is one of the reasons! Congratulations on featuring a truly original home and a beautiful family.

Are we talking about a grown up doing her job here or a kindergarten student? I know I am old school but the idea of " finding ways to incentivize hard work" makes me wonder if this person is mature enough to work on her own.

Totally agree with littlemissunshine, but I am of an age to remember when people had pets but were not obsessed like some pet owners today. It gets ridiculous when house guests want to bring their dogs or cats along for the weekend and are offended when they cannot take them to their bedroom!. I am building an outside kennel and dog house for my grand-dogs and friend's animals. News flash...pets are 'not' people.

Lovely room -both pics! I am curious about that little stove in the corner. I so miss a wood stove these days and think a wee one like yours may fit in my house. Will you share the source? Thanks

No TV for years, we do watch movies sometimes though and find the library system great for borrowing flicks. I buy some classics through Amazon that I know we'll watch again later.Don't tell the FBI but I have a pal who copies some for me too.

When I go somewhere and the TV is on I am totally reinforced in my opinion of the crap on the tube. Sure there are always a few things worth watching but I'd rather do without than invite all that junk and noise into my home!

@ELIZ I have my grandfather's typewriter circa 1920, and it has been a prized possession in my various homes for more than 35 years. I love it and display it with some poetry he typed on it. Trendy? Not for me!

This poem by Roald Dahl is kind of lengthy but priceless!

Television

The most important thing we've learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set --
Or better still, just don't install
The idiotic thing at all.
In almost every house we've been,
We've watched them gaping at the screen.
They loll and slop and lounge about,
And stare until their eyes pop out.
(Last week in someone's place we saw
A dozen eyeballs on the floor.)
They sit and stare and stare and sit
Until they're hypnotised by it,
Until they're absolutely drunk
With all that shocking ghastly junk.
Oh yes, we know it keeps them still,
They don't climb out the window sill,
They never fight or kick or punch,
They leave you free to cook the lunch
And wash the dishes in the sink --
But did you ever stop to think,
To wonder just exactly what
This does to your beloved tot?
IT ROTS THE SENSE IN THE HEAD!
IT KILLS IMAGINATION DEAD!
IT CLOGS AND CLUTTERS UP THE MIND!
IT MAKES A CHILD SO DULL AND BLIND
HE CAN NO LONGER UNDERSTAND
A FANTASY, A FAIRYLAND!
HIS BRAIN BECOMES AS SOFT AS CHEESE!
HIS POWERS OF THINKING RUST AND FREEZE!
HE CANNOT THINK -- HE ONLY SEES!
'All right!' you'll cry. 'All right!' you'll say,
'But if we take the set away,
What shall we do to entertain
Our darling children? Please explain!'
We'll answer this by asking you,
'What used the darling ones to do?
'How used they keep themselves contented
Before this monster was invented?'
Have you forgotten? Don't you know?
We'll say it very loud and slow:
THEY ... USED ... TO ... READ! They'd READ and READ,
AND READ and READ, and then proceed
To READ some more. Great Scott! Gadzooks!
One half their lives was reading books!
The nursery shelves held books galore!
Books cluttered up the nursery floor!
And in the bedroom, by the bed,
More books were waiting to be read!
Such wondrous, fine, fantastic tales
Of dragons, gypsies, queens, and whales
And treasure isles, and distant shores
Where smugglers rowed with muffled oars,
And pirates wearing purple pants,
And sailing ships and elephants,
And cannibals crouching 'round the pot,
Stirring away at something hot.
(It smells so good, what can it be?
Good gracious, it's Penelope.)
The younger ones had Beatrix Potter
With Mr. Tod, the dirty rotter,
And Squirrel Nutkin, Pigling Bland,
And Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and-
Just How The Camel Got His Hump,
And How the Monkey Lost His Rump,
And Mr. Toad, and bless my soul,
There's Mr. Rate and Mr. Mole-
Oh, books, what books they used to know,
Those children living long ago!
So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books,
Ignoring all the dirty looks,
The screams and yells, the bites and kicks,
And children hitting you with sticks-
Fear not, because we promise you
That, in about a week or two
Of having nothing else to do,
They'll now begin to feel the need
Of having something to read.
And once they start -- oh boy, oh boy!
You watch the slowly growing joy
That fills their hearts. They'll grow so keen
They'll wonder what they'd ever seen
In that ridiculous machine,
That nauseating, foul, unclean,
Repulsive television screen!
And later, each and every kid
Will love you more for what you did.

-- Roald Dahl

It looks OK in picture four but like someone else said, saturation point!
Personally I think it looks way past hideous with a that chandelier.

Someone certainly 'put a bird' on this guy!
He is sweet, but dunno 'bout his 'craft' idea.
This whole craft thing lately reminds me a lot of the crap that was produced in the 1970's. I mean over at Design Sponge they were painting toss away drinking cups...read a book if you have that much time on your hands!

#wyffe, yes that is true, but it seems so cliche to see the stuffed result of a hunt on an apartment wall in the city. But to be fair maybe one of the owners hunt and the 'trophy' belongs there!
Aside from that small jarring note the apartment is stylish and all those books are wonderfully library like.

Large crystal pickling salt and a bit of paper towel or newspaper is the way to clean a cast iron pan after using. Since I started using this method my pans just gleam. Rub in a little oil once in a while as well. I have several skillets and a flat griddle that are family hand me downs one from 1931. Nothing better!

'Feather products like wallpapers and bedding can run in the many thousands of dollars for a single item, not to mention the fact that it's not the most pleasant experience for the animals involved in the process.'

Well as long as people eat fowl there will be feathers to utilize. Humans have used feathers for hundreds of years no need to get squeamish now.
