My roommate and I lifted up our beds to get good storage underneath. My bed was longways against the wall and underneath we were able to get our mini-fridege, microwave, and laundry basket. I did always worry about all those microwaves penetrating through my bed, but 10 years later I still seem to be ok! We had the cinderblock problem, so vertical storage wasn't an option... under the bed worked great for us and really freed up some floor space to make things look less cluttered.

No experience with moving via public transit, but I have moved my entire house twice via VW Cabrio covertible. Put the top down and balace large items on the bike rack hooked over the trunk. It is actually really, really easy and the stares and laughs are very entertaining.

I agree that none of the people featured are even halfway prepared for homeownership. Anyone who advises those people to buy should be held personally accountable for the the real estate mess we're in. However, I just bought a condo two months ago and I feel like in many markets this is a great time to buy. My place was a steal! Houses are sitting around on the market for ages and sellers are desperate. Interest rates are extremely low. Of course... I had saved for a downpayment plus a rainy day fund and had no debt and no boat, so I guess I'm a weirdo. Who needs good credit and and home when you've got a $40,000 boat?!?!

I'm in the market for new towels and I've been considering some from Lands End, based on reviews from friends. I've never actually touched them. Has anyone had an experience with Lands End towels?

I also have the Overstock version. When we had people in the house installing hardwood floors, something mysterious and brown became forever ingrained on the surface. Otherwise, it has held it's whiteness and I really love it. And for $150, you can replace it in a few years if it gets yucky! I use mine in the bedroom as a vanity (with a tabletop mirror) and a desk. It's a good size to spread out paperwork. Very practical and cheery! I highly reccomend.

Thanks for the help, everyone! I would never have thought of the swing arm and the idea of a screen is great, too. The door is a bit drafty and I'm looking into ways to insulate. I had hoped to hang drapes that would extend past the window and door on either side to make the glass area appear a bit wider, but the protruding wall on the left side is preventing me from doing this. I'm really open to anything.

Thanks again!!
Emily

I moved in with my boyfriend after two years - we were both sick of our roommates, so it was somewhat real-estate motivated. We lived together in a 500 s.f. studio for a year and a half and decided if we could survive (and even enjoy!) that, we were meant to be. We just bought a 770 s.f. one-bedroom condo a month ago to take advantage of the slumping real estate market in our area. We didn't want to miss the bargain. I wonder how many other couples were brought together by a mutual desire to get in while the getting's good? I can't imagine that signing a marriage certificate is any scarier than signing your life away on a mortgage! My situation has worked out great - living together and signing leases and mortgages has confirmed and solidified our compatibility. It is interesting how real estate can affect your life like that.

*heather leaf* - I thought the exact same thing about the clutter :)
