5 Tips to Make Your House Appear Cleaner Than It Is
11/2/11 2:02 PM

If it is an eveing visit, use candles and dimmers on your lights. Our housekeeper was on a two week vacay and since we are super busy cleaning was not done. A friend recently stopped over one night unexpectedly called, and came so we just dimmed all of the lights and lit a few candles. Kept it bright enough not to seem like a love den but low enough to hide the fact that the carpets were a mess with dog hair fromt he three dogs we have and every inch of surface had dust on it. Our friend commented about how clean our house always is, lol. Thank g-d that our housekeeper resumes her schedule today!

My wife an I have a den where with black walls and most of the furniture is black silver or white. We have used pink as an accent color. It looks amazing and I usually hate pink.

I love this space and envy when people can take so much vintage and make it look so amazing!

Our housekeeper cleans our home once a week, before we hired her, we only dusted once a month due to schedules etc. 1400 sq feet, two adults and three dogs - the hair is the main thing in our home.

@Nadine, I am sorry that I was not able to articulate my point clearly and you feel as if I am jealous of people with money. That is hardly the case. I was simply attempting to state that I, personally, find homes that are designed within constraints of a "real life budget" (however one defines that is up to them) to be more interesting because you get to the core of who the person in that type of space is. The pieces that they select are specifically in their homes because they decided exactly what they want and most of the time gave up many other other things that they considered in the design process as a result. That choice and sacrifice makes more individuality stand out in a space and exposes ones personality a bit more. When one has money like a celebrity it is very likely that they can have almost "whatever" they want. To me, that is not interesting. Beautiful? Yes.. Interesting? no... I do not even half way believe that I "know best." Much like your post mine was simply just my opinion. I agree with you that larger than life spaces can provide inspiration for creativity. I only hope that in the future you spend more of your time contributing those types of ideas to the AT boards than assumptions you make about people that you don't know.

Can you imagine what their water bill is to keep that grass green, or is it faux? I dislike celebrity homes, and homes of very wealthy people. If I had millions of dollars of course my house would look super awesome. Those of us with normal budgets are more inspirational to me because when a place looks super awesome on a normal budget, it speaks more about WHO that person is. I understand them more, it seems more personal to me because you know that every decision probably had something that was decided against for more reasons than just personal taste. For example, when I spend a lot of money on a chair, it takes away budget for something else so I have to weigh exactly what I want, is the chair worth giving up x y or z and why so? That brings out the character in a place because your choices are limited and tell more as opposed to having it all.....(Not that I would mind the $ :)

One of my favorite lucite pieces is the Pasha Chair by Pedrali. If I had just a bit more space in the dining area, I would totally get to for the heads of the table!

@ sriley I believe the table looks like it maybe from West Elm and the chairs look like something I saw at ZGallerie. If those are not the actual places where these came from, those places have very similar products.

"I don't get out of bed for anything less than a million bucks."

$30k for a framed photograph of The Beatles?!

You are a fab designer, your children are making your bday dinner and one of them blows their nose and does not wash their hands before preparing the food. Ummm.. I hope that was just editing. Or, I guess not only do they all have guac in common they also have a taste for boogers?

All these shows do is help me realize that being rich is not always the best thing. Money doesn't hurt and luxury is certainly enjoyable, but I will take my comfortable middle class life with a side of humility any day before I start acting like these jokes! - booger free please!

I am not trying to be rude because I do appreciate the design in this home and its uniqueness, however, part of why I love AT is that there are generally modest homes/condos/apartments etc. on here. At 3500 sq feet this is a very large home. Please stick with smaller spaces as they are the reason that I read this blog. If I wanted to see large homes there are plenty of other venues for that.

The bonsai garden is beautiful! I love that the place is original. I usually start a collection thinking I would like this type of look, however, when I get too many of something I get annoyed and take it all down. I guess in my own space it is too much "clutter" but I really enjoy other peoples' collections. They really bring out an originality factor, especially in this space.

My wife and I have a small closet in one of our guest rooms that is a semi-walk in. We turned that room into the den and I found a small desk that fits into the closet along with a chair. I put some shelves on the wall in front of the desk to hold everything I need and it is now a fully functioning office nook. The best part is when I am done I can close the door and no one has to look at computer monitors, papers or files.

My wife and I have a black den and we really like it. We painted one of the walls white for accent/light and the rest black. We also have a four inch white base molding and a 2-3" white crown and a white ceiling. The whole room is black, white and silver with the color coming in through art work and accessories that we have yet to purchase (still waiting on the perfect things). It is a small room but it looks great. I don't remember the brand or color of paint we used. I do find that our black walls show so much more dust and finger prints than any other color in our house. Good luck, it is a really neat look when done properly!
