Having worked 17 years for the largest kitchen retailer, I can tell you that most gadgets should not be cleaned in the dishwasher. Often the little pins and hinges are not stainless and will deteriorate quickly. Most detergents use a type of bleach that is terrible mixed with any aluminum product. (But that same detergent washes up baseball pants like nobodies business.) Lastly the issue with knives is the water pressure rattling them around. Those tiny dings and nicks on a blade make it very difficult to hone and re sharpen.

The silverware is the only part I don't mind putting up! I hate that little puddle on the bottom of the glasses....

I've been selling dinnerware for 17 years, and for everyday simplicity, you cannot beat porcelain. It is fired twice at the highest temp, and is the most durable of any dish. Start with white plates and add all kinds of cool colors and patterns in the other pieces. They can be gently buffed with Barkeepers friend and look brand new. They can be dressed up or down. Stoneware or ceramic is where you will find the best color saturation. They are fired only once so are a little more fragile.

I use a bowl for things that aren't dishwasher safe and knives. I never understand why people slip knives into sinks of soapy water....if you have sharp knives it's a little dangerous! But I wash up that bowl every time...nothing hangs out in my sink.

I couldn't agree more. Offer to bring something, and if you re working or slammed tell me so and offer to bring wine. I will probably say no but happy you offered. The reciprocating thing gets me. It's how you were raised. Some people go to parties some give them. I don't mind a good guest not reciprocating per se, but if you aren't gracious and I don't hear from you unless I call, chances are you aren't coming back.

mango pits, peach pits, plum pits, olive pits....I will gnaw on them all. My family eats the meat, I get the bones. But my secret addiction. The juice in the bottom of the salad bowl. Vinegar and oli always, but sometimes there are tomato remnants, crouton crumbs, herbs, whatever. If there's a lot, I'll drink it. Just a little, wipe it up with a hunk of bread. Heaven!

I work at the greatest kitchen store and we sell a lot of variations on the garlic press. In my book there is no equivalent. I let mine dry on the counter and the flaky garlic residue peels right off. A little soap and water and done. Nothing to be ashamed of!

Disclaimer, I work at WS so I bought my kooky gadgets at a discount. The pineapple slicer is the best invention ever. Hands down. If you like fresh pineapple there is no other way to go. The juice is left in the shell and I use that in my smoothie. I save the core for my juicer, and the rings are great. I also own the banana slicer. I bought it as a joke and use it every day. It is a pain to clean though, so you have to know that stuff up front. I have used the cherry pitter at work and if you are canning cherries, I can't imagine not using one, but it is useless for me at home, chew and spit the pit works fine for a handful at a time. I was sad to not see the mango slicer by OXO here. It makes quick work out of pitting a mango and you get so much more flesh than you do with a just a knife. Would I buy these things if I didn't get them discounted? Probably!

I bought all my Florida strawberries this year from a small market called Aldi. They were never more than .99 for the large quart (16 oz) and were full of small, delicious berries. The grocery chain across the street sold berries from the same Florida city for $2.50 and there were about 12 giant, tasteless berries. Size is not a measure of taste for sure. Looking forward to the farmer's market for my local berries....

I have discovered over the years that the flush is worse with citric based liquors. I never, ever drink Triple Sec, it feels like anaphylactic shock, altho Cointreau doesn't have this effect. I also noticed in Europe I never flushed even with Triple Sec infused Sangria. I was thinking citrus and sulfites were getting me. Luckily wine rarely does this, so I am happy!

It does have a lot to do with the order of things, but some blenders are better at the vortex thing than others. My Waring is 21 years old, works amazing. It is safe to say they don't make them like that anymore! When it dies, I'm going Vitamix, I'm pretty sure it'll last the next 20 years!

I freely give recipes, but I always warn my friends that I don't always follow it. I may sub a different flour or nut, toss in a little something extra. I also know that my Neilsen Massey vanilla makes a different product than their grocery vanilla....ditto with cocoa and chocolate. I would never say no, it's a secret. I've never been good at keeping secrets. (I'm 47)

When I sit down to decorate 200 cookies, I have a spoon I use every time for flooding. I wish I could buy it for $10, this one is plastic and I picked it up at a coffee stand in the Munich airport (and brought it home) if it breaks I will sob...I search constantly for the perfect replacement! Falls into that great European engineering category I guess!
