Making the Decision to Renovate

I agree with Julian. Please don't use muriatic acid on your brick. It can cause further damage to the brick and the mortar joints, and also can leave residue on the brick's surface.

The National Park Service has a great Preservation Brief on how to clean and remove paint from historic brick:

It is long, so scroll down to the part about "Chemical Cleaners to Remove Paint and Other Coatings, Stains and Graffiti"

I hope that helps! :)

i usually use garlic when it has the green sprout, but pull the sprout out. i've never realized i could eat the sprout!

be careful about storing garlic in olive oil - this is a easy way to get botulism:

i wouldn't add any shelves. it will look too cluttered.

one, large painting is best.

i would paint the recessed wall area a lighter color than the rest of the walls.

i also have knotty pine paneling in my basement. it goes from floor to ceiling and while i think the color of it brings some "warmth" to the space, i really don't like the way it looks.

i was planning on eventually ripping it out and replacing it with gwb board, but since i don't have the money for that right now, painting sounds like a great solution. thanks!!
