I put all of the pictures I had of my ex into a large bowl and lit candles, put on solemn music , poured myself a drink and burned the photographs along with a "letter of ending." The same weekend I bought all new bedding and then I slept diagonally in bed using all of the pillows for a few weeks. I spent the next few months doing all the little things that make me feel good about life and I slowly healed - my apartment felt like home again. My partner and I live in a 775sf condo that has limited storage. I bike to the grocery store three blocks away and I can take light rail to Costco. I can only fit 2 bags of groceries on the bike. I have a rolling cart that folds up when not in use that I take to Costco that will hold 200 pounds. I buy most of my staples in bulk at Costco and get my perishable foods from the grocery store. We designed our kitchen cabinets to have multiple shelves so that they have very little wasted space and we added shelving to the coat closet, hall closet and bedroom closet for extra storage. I look at those open shelves in the kitchen and the only thing that comes to mind is San Francisco. I hope she is not in the kitchen the next time the ground moves. Sirima's Vintage Industrial Artist's Loft House Tour |

Artwork is a must in every room. Pay attention to the medium and you should not have any problems. In my bathroom there is a large Buddha head made from a single piece of Indonesian hardwood that grows in a humid environment. On the other wall I have a Bronze Shiva. Both pieces are lit with track lights. They look great and the moisture isn't a problem. My biggest pet peeve is a moldy/dirty tub, shower curtain, toilet or sink. I just bought a high efficiency dishwasher. It uses less electricity and water than hand washing. It has a short cycle for times when it is not full. I still hand wash my china and crystal because the dishwasher detergents can be harsh, but everything else goes into the dishwasher. My Life Without a Dishwasher Renters Solutions |

tiedye DC I used to work night shift and made my room completely black by painting the window. I used two layers of white latex paint show that the window showed white to the street and then put two layers of black latex paint on the inside. It was completely black in my bedroom when I turned out the lights. When I moved I just took a razor blade to the corner of the window and peeled the paint off. The landlord never knew. We have a Carrington model natural latex mattress from Basset. Best mattress I have ever owned. The latex does run warm but with the addition of a terry cloth mattress cover the problem was solved. Managed to get a floor model at half price. My only complaint would be its weight - very heavy. Lessons Learned: Reliving Maxwell's \"A Year in Bed\" |

I never realized how much street noise was compromising my sleep. We lived in a 26 story high-rise that was next to I-405. Even after installing velvet drapes with both blackout and noise reducing batting and replacing the sliders to the balcony traffic noise woke you during rush hour. We ended up selling the apartment and moving out of downtown. Our current place in next to a light rail stop but the excellent windows block 98% of noise. No more freeway noise! I'm glad she likes her home. We should all love where we live. She is certainly brave with the color combos. I really liked the second of the two bathrooms, but the rest of the house not so much. Kristy's Tropical Tudor House Tour |

Always cook mine in the microwave, in a glass baking dish. I stretch plastic wrap over the top of the dish and microwave it( 4 slices, thick cut) about 5 to 6 minutes. Pat it dry to remove excess fat and you have crispy bacon and no mess in the oven. How To Make Perfect Bacon in the Oven |

I use my grandmothers little pot, it has a glass lid so that you can see what the rice is doing while it cooks. I always saute the (basmati) rice in butter and salt. Stirring constantly until it is hot and then add the water or stock. I don't stir it until it is done. Turn down the heat every three or four minutes until its on low and then let it sit for five minutes. Always good never burns. How to Cook Rice on the Stove |

Clutter is actually a decorating style. I know many people who have filled their homes with wonderful collections of things they love and find interesting. I personally love a room that I see something different in every time I visit. Collecting is not hoarding. Collections tell a story about their owners. I used to have neighbors who were minimalist. They had four pieces of furniture in their living room, no art, no photographs, white walls, no drapes. They were self-righteous about their minimalism. When ever they "needed" anything they would borrow it from me. They borrowed my serving pieces, my dining room chairs, my laptop/ high speed internet connection and my coffemaker. I first started buying my furniture in the early 80's. My house was filled with chintz and English antiques. My taste has always been for traditional interiors. Over the years my taste has come to include many Asian pieces and Pan-Asian carved wood artwork. I recently downsized to a small, very modern condo. I moved in and squeezed in everything I couldn't bare to part with. I have been here a year and I have been selling many pieces of furniture that really didn't work in this space. After 35 years of swearing I would never buy anything modern. I have purchased a long low modern sofa. I am beginning to select modern accessories and place them among my antiques. I am finding the change pleases me. I still draw the line at plastic furniture. Nan Kemper once quipped: The only plastic in my house is plastic surgery. What Is Your Design Confession? |

I love the color scheme. The child's room is great. The dining room wall paper is scary, color good/ pattern bad. Wall paper quickly dates a room and has to come down if you ever want to sell. Washington Square Park Living Room and Kids' Room Home By Novogratz |

My partner refers to me as the design nazi. I make most of the design decisions and most of his comments are regarding prices. He does affect my decisions. He frequently is able to get me to "tone down" my love of dramatic interiors. When I ask his opinion his usual reply is: If you like it get it, just leave the electronics to me.
