Remove the doorknob and buy a thin sheet of plywood. Paint the plywood white and flatten it against the door (with nails if your allowed to - you can alway putty up the walls afterwards) making a seamless and flat wall.

I'm definetly considered part of the FB Generation and I remember Elizabeth Taylor, just like what nerdyredhead said: "How can you not?" She was a legend! And she will be missed.

The cabinets aren't so bad... they just need a little fix up. I would take the wood above the sink off, change the light fixture to some sort of modern pendant. I would remove the terrible counter blacksplash and add subway tiles for a clean look. I would paint the walls a light blue color and remove the curtains and add charming white linen cafe type curtains.
And about that awkward space above the oven... I would buy a black one slightly bigger to fill up the space or remove the mircowave and place shelves and create some sort of bookshelf to hold cook books.

I would add new bright red handcloths to place over the oven.

Remove the light fixture ahead and replace it with something sleek. Also clear up the clutter with shelves over the desk (West Elm has an awesome array of shelves) and remove the drawer and add a slim file cabinet - a vintage metal piece which would fit nicely with the black bookcase, and maybe even switch your chair for a modern one. A floor lamp would also brighten up the space. A rug will also help tie the rooms together.
