Every time I see a post like this, there's a flood of "SO GLAD THEY DIDN'T PAINT IT!!". But when was the last time Apartment Therapy posted a plain old paint job? They don't really post them anymore (probably from all the complaints from wood-lovers), so I don't know why you're all constantly expecting paint jobs.

Why does everyone say foyer wrong? It's foy-ay, not foy-er. Be-foy-ay? Not a good pun.

If you're set on keeping the parquet, I think your best option is to paint the panelling. I think you should also beef up your mantle when you get a chance to balance out the hearth. Then avoid adding more patterns to the room. Parquet can definitely look good, like in this photo: http://bit.ly/QPRp1f

However, DO NOT choose white. White vertical panelling has a tendency to look beachy (like white beadboard!). I think a sage or grey-green colour would look nice with the honey-coloured floor. Or a nice grey-blue : http://bit.ly/TKvCmi

I like the colours, but I think the beadboard was a mistake

My solution is always walking around neighbourhoods I love to find colour/design combinations that are already working well on houses I find attractive.

If you've got the money/time I'd get all new doors to match the new cabinets. But you could also totally pull off different cabinets.

i agree with the above. paint a cool colour (maybe a grey reminiscent of cement), get some white drapes and tie them in the middle instead of of to the side. adjustable metal lamps also tend to look industrial, so maybe add one of those in.

the mirrored book shelf looks more glam than industrial (mirrored furniture usually does), and the tv unit is also not very industrial, it's too clean and finished. try to get some new textures into the room like raw, unfinished wood and metal, or something that's been roughed up (like this coffee table: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sBE3wHnYkes/S7AaK9ViDrI/AAAAAAAAAVc/NyOBRFoJr7w/s1600/Country+Living+Living+Room.jpg).

the best thing about industrial style is that it can be done on a tiny tiny budget. scout out some factories that are throwing away old equipment, or look on craigslist for people getting rid of pallets, small trailers, etc.

i don't care where you live, a tip is NEVER mandatory. if it was mandatory it would have been included on the bill. usually i'll tip 15%, and if my server is exceptional i'll tip 20% to say thanks for a great evening. but if my server sucked, why would i tip at all? they get their pay check for the labour, but i refuse to pay for services that i didn't receive.

@GREENWOODGAL I think that's a silly excuse. Maybe 100 sqft wouldn't work for you, but climbing up a ladder? I live in a loft, and honestly it's no different than stairs first thing in the morning. And even if ladders were a problem, say for the elderly, why not make a tiny house with a ground-level bedroom? Sounds like you're just being stubborn about keeping your McMansion!

correlation doesn't mean causality. it's more likely that people who make their bed are by nature more productive, not that their productivity is caused by making the bed.

@Mrs Kitz I'd love this in my space to improve the air flow have access to my books in my two favourite places to read (my bedroom and my living room), and also to be able to conceal some of the clutter when guests come over. it's not always nice to have all of your nicknacks on display.

it's very important for children to feel like their parents take their wants and ideas seriously, so whatever your decision, explain it thoroughly and make sure your child had some sort of say in their living arrangements. in our house there is only one rule, and the rule is "no hurting yourself allowed!!". so, safety permitting, i would be totally on-board with my kids doing this.
