I use an app on my phone to keep track of expenses, it's pretty handy to enter things for each day. The one I have is iXspenselt and you can set yourself a monthly budget and put in quite a bit of detail. Always interesting to see how much I spend on cafes or other places that I frequent, you can learn from your habits! It's far easier than keeping paper receipts! I only keep them if it's a major purchase, in which case they get filed.. sort of.. or an item I might need to return, where the receipts will inevitably live in a drawer for several months before I do some cleaning out!

As other people have said, these photos do abstract the buildings by not showing any context, but it obviously raises quite an important issue for the rest of the world, particularly countries like the US and Australia - (aussie here) - we are the countries of suburban sprawl, sadly, and it's just not sustainable! Our carbon and resource footprints are who knows how many times that of a family living in one of these buildings.

On the other hand I agree that towers aren't necessarily ideal places to live! I really hope for the sake of the earth that there are people who are happy living in them, but personally I can't imagine living in anything higher than a few stories from the ground. I work in a tall building and I quite enjoy that, but hopefully densification of cities will happen in a way more similar to european cities like Barcelona. With five or six stories uniformly across an area you can get a similar density to a tower, and that's not too ridiculous a distance from the ground. If you still have a balance of good planning that means green and open spaces aren't far away then I think more people would be content!

Hmm, I agree with thelemonofpink. The first one is a nice idea, you could easily mix in books and other objects. The chalkboard paint is fun too.

Wow I thought I could complain living in a small space without a balcony, but I'm fortunate to just be on the second floor and have a carport/outdoor paved space where I've done a couple of painting projects. I agree with some other people though, don't spray paint indoors! Or do anything else that gives off strong fumes if you don't have decent ventilation, it's really not good.

Yes definitely bring in a potted tree for a christmas tree! We decided to start doing that last year - no more guilt about cutting down a tree...

So nice. I would really love any of those in my own bathroom. But I wonder if they would look dated a bit sooner than you would hope for...?

So very cool. But I have to agree, the crazy wide angle/HDR makes it a bit hard to really understand the space!

Wow I really want to live in Berlin! I'm currently in Melbourne though and pay $950 for a small 1br, if you want a decent 2 br I think it would be around $1300+, depending in how close to the city you are. As a student however I'm pretty much paying the max I can afford while being close by to my uni!

Ha, as an Australian not having been to the US I learnt a few things from this post too! I agree with you MZP, they're all second nature for me too.
The most surprising ones are the lack of electric kettles and switches on powerpoints for sure. I've also lived in Europe though and I have to say they generally do much better than we do.. well in Germany at least! They take recycling to a much better level and are overall very eco-conscious.

From what I've heard from people who have visited america they are generally amazed at how big *everything* is, from food serving sizes to cars and houses. When it comes to houses though the suburban sprawl means the average size of houses are getting bigger.. and it's so unnecessary! But anyway. I will leave my rant on housing for another time..

Ah, I upset some of my neighbours recently when I was using the communal washing machine at like 11pm.. The people in the flat next door to the laundry must find it pretty loud, and go to sleep early, so they left a very eloquent note on the machine saying simply to f*** off. I can completely understand the annoyance, it's not something that you always realise, but at the same time the note could have been more ..pleasant!
I had been working late a lot so washing my clothes at night was kind of the only option, and besides I've heard people using the washing machine at 12 or even later, so I'm not the only guilty one..

Otherwise, I wouldn't have a clue if I'm a noisy neighbour or not. Generally my little apartment block is fairly peaceful though.

Hmm. I think the new look is pretty good! The organisation is logical and definitely a good idea, but there is a bit much overlap at the moment it seems. I'm sure that can be fixed though!

Excellent tips. I actually think just 2 email accounts should be enough, but then having one for spam you sign up for for whatever reason isn't such a bad idea. But only if you're attached to the spam..?
