I always appreciate the question, "How much is enough?"
http://unclutterer.com/2010/03/23/how-much-is-enough/

It's a personal question, and each person has their own answer. But it still is a useful question for everyone. It has led me to get rid of a lot of stuff!

@shoestringgirl, it'll make the move so much easier! By editing your belongings now, you'll have only what you need to start off on the right foot in your new place. You could also do the exercises about defining your style so that you're ready to do the adding when you move.

@anniekins, I had that same apartment with my boyfriend! I didn't feel I could ask him to help clean, since it wasn't his apartment. And he did need a place to put his stuff, since he mostly stayed at my place. My solution was to put a big laundry basket in the corner and ask him to keep all his stuff in there. Also, if I picked up his stuff, I just tossed it in there without having to do any real work. Somehow, this laundry-basket corralling worked, and there was domestic harmony: we moved in together, got married, and then bought a home!

Hi, Derrick - I'd say, get rid of the speakers! (I know you don't want to, but I do think it'd help.) The art above the fireplace could be a great color and bigger. Paint the walls. Plants make such a difference because they bring life to a room. I'd change the lamp - or at least the black lampshade - by the couch to add another feel/style to the room to make it more interesting. Maybe same thing with the rug - a Persian or kilim rug? Good luck with your home!

My husband's from Mexico, so we celebrate Epiphany (aka Three Kings Day). We put our shoes under the Christmas tree tonight, and then we'll take down the tree tomorrow (or , more likely, the following day, since we're having a Three Kings Day party tomorrow night with a Mexican rosca cake!)

Abby, thanks for including the before and after pictures of painting our room. That made my day. And the new paint job itself keeps making me happy. I've been realizing how nice it feels to improve the home (painting, repairs, etc.) without bringing more stuff into it.

Emily the Cat, ha ha! The "kids" card table at my aunt and uncle's, when we were in our 20's.

I just decluttered my files and pulled out an inch of paper to shred. Every six months (probably because of the semi-annual Cure!), I go through and edit my files, so I'm amazed that there's always so much to toss each time. I love creating the space; it makes it so much easier to file and find things!

I use the filing system recommended by David Bach in his "Smart Women/Smart Couples" books. I like it, and I have a friend who does, too.

I got additional bath hardware installed! For the master bath, I put a hook on the wall so that I could hang our bathmat each day so it will dry thoroughly. That bathroom just has a shower, so we can't just throw it over the side of a tub. In the guest bathroom, I put a hook on the wall so that it is easy to grab a towel after a shower or bath instead of dripping across the floor, and I put another towel bar on the wall. These seem like minor changes, but they really help with quality-of-life!

Anyone in the NYC area looking for a painter? I just had Chris Cranberry, owner of Claddaugh Painting (www.claddaghpaintingservice.com), paint my apartment, and I am *so* happy with the result. My house feels like a home! Here are some pictures:

Biggest accomplishments for me have been to pick out paint colors and to schedule the painters to come this weekend. Yea! We're going to have the entire 2-bedroom apartment re-painted, and I'm so excited. Getting the right color on the wall will help me decide what colors will look best for the dining table and landing strip. Here are the paint colors!

Pixie, have you been to a store to test out mattresses yet? I've bought two mattresses in the last three years, and each time I just go to Macy's, and it's pretty easy to tell which one I like best (that I can afford). After lying on a few, you know if it's too soft or too firm or too high, etc. I've found that a decent mattress is about $750, but maybe others know of good deals.

Storage cabinets in the bathrooms! I know the guy who built the vanities and mirrors originally, and I'd like him to build storage cupboards to go above the toilets in each of the two bathrooms. But they're $225 each. Someday soon!

Has anyone ever used Benjamin Moore "Homestead Green" or "Yarmouth Blue"? How do you feel about them? I'm considering them for a guest bedroom. Thanks!

Another thought for the photos above - instead of the wine rack, you could have a landing strip.

Larabee, I don't know if I have any good suggestions, but I'd love to know what systems you eventually find. I'd like to do a similar arrangement in our livingroom. Have you looked at the office systems at Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn. They're pretty expensive, but they look almost like built-ins, and they seem to offer so much storage.

I need a place to put coats, bags, keys and papers. I think I'll get a little storage cupboard (dresser or buffet) so that we can put our keys and papers on it - instead of on the kitchen counter - and put a chair next to it so that we have a place to set bags and to put on shoes. I'll put hooks above the chair so that we can hang our coats. Another system I've considered is a bench and hooks, but then I don't know where we'd put the keys and papers. Maybe in a basket on the bench or up high on the shelf? Here's my dream bench and hooks:

Now I just need the budget... And I want to paint the room first (I have paint samples on the wall already) because I'm not sure what color furniture to use in the entryway. Maybe white so that it brightens the space. I'm worried that another wood would look strange because the kitchen cabinets are cherry, and the floor is maple.

How do you all deal with different wood colors? Is it strange to have maple, cherry and dark woods all in one space? Instead of introducing another wood, should I use painted/color furniture?
