@Chauca but are your bathroom and kitchen floors tile, or vinyl? I didn't like this at first, but the idea of a really interesting floor when everything else is neutral is growing on me.

I definately wish designers would opt for floating cabinets in family bathrooms. I'm so dang tired of kicking the stepstool in our downstairs bathroom out of the way just to open or close the door. And since the builders made the counters 43" high, we've got probably another year of needing them.

(Yes, they tried to tell me that high counters were the new trend. I didn't beleive it then, and still don't. But my 6'1" husband likes them, and when they visits, my 6'4" and above brothers love them. )

I'm especially befuddled by the people who think the original bathroom was, original. It's exactly the fixtures I had in 3 different apartments and homes built between 1978 and 1985. And the fake marble tile! One of the places I was in had them in olive green, your grey ones were comparatively classy!

I don't see why you couldn't use veg pulps in stock. Depending on your particular stockpot and stove, you might be risking a bit of scorch if you had too much pulp creating too thick a slurry. It's certainly worth experimenting.

Nobody has mentioned composting or vermicompsting. Are we all just assuming that answer?

I add newspaper because I lack trees, so no leaves. I tear it in long strips and stir in in with a garden fork. We used to have a never ending supply, but we no longer subscribe. I've had to keep my out out for other sources of 'brown' for the compost.

we get a free local paper twice a week which may be 10 full sheets of newsprint. and if I'm in the sort of cafe which has newspapers for patrons, and it's late in the day, I take the classifieds which are sitting in the rack. no one ever reads them. If it's near closing, I ask the cashier if I can just take the paper, as I know they'll be tossing it soon.

I also add coffee filters, tea bags, paper napkins from take out meals, boxes and other bits and pieces.

When my kids moved out, we fell into the problem of not filling the dishwasher. I learned that my DW uses less water on the china and crystal setting, and allows me to clean a smaller load daily. I may use less water running a higher water use cycle every two or three days, but I believe that all the handwashing and rinsing needed for things I want clean NOW, as well as potentially having to handwash items food dried on during the wait negates that savings. I've had plastic items get irretreviably moldy while waiting to be washed, another waste.

In addition to using the shorter cycle, I considered what I wasn't putting in, that could be. For instance, cans and jars to be recycled usually got rinsed as they were emptied. NOw I stick them in with that nights wash and they get clean with the same water that was going to be used anyway.

Pet dishes, bathroom water glasses, bathroom soap dishes and toothbrush cups, various bins and containers in the bathrooms and kitchen. All of these used to get hand washed irregularly, and maybe not often enough. I accumulated spares, so I can replace them with clean and take the dirty to be washed whenever I need to fill the machine a bit more.

Finally, we have begun eliminating 'disposable' storage containers and zipper bags. Leftovers and lunches go into higher quality containers which need washing instead.
