My mom had a similar problem when we first moved into our old house. What she did was put old books horizontal (as stands since the tops of the cabinets went down a bit) and then put the vintage things she had on top of the books so they would stand as tall as the cabinets edge. For instance, we have some old tins, like a Tollhouse Cookie tin from the 60's, and a syrup container and napkin dispenser from the 50's. I thought it really showed off her style, so I'd say go thrifting for things that show off your style! But remember the old book trick if the tops go lower than the edge!
