The best thing about this post is all the insightful, informative comments.
I appreciate hearing how others judge quality and value, and how they go about mindful, informed purchasing. There's wisdom here -- and quite a lot of humor. The original post, not so much.

@helgel and @jessicabrooke -- you are hilarious!

This is truly a beautiful bedroom. I liked it in the bedroom contest too. Later I noticed a seemingly identical bedroom on Houzz listed as an NYC project done by Amanda Austin Interiors. This current photo has slightly different bedding. It's still a beautiful room.

My question about AT contests in general: do you actually have to decorate your small cool space/bedroom retreat yourself? What if you have the money and good taste to pick a talented designer. Or if you don't? What if you are an interior designer yourself?

In other contests, I've noted the disparity in the entries. Some of the bedroom retreat entries were obviously dorm rooms done by college students on a small budget, while others were done with both financial and professional resources.

How does this work?

What an elegant combination of traditional and modern. I like the bathroom and want to know where the you got the hardware too. The mirror above the sink looks both vintage and modern at the same time.

I haven't seen anything like this since Christopher Lowell's show, Interior Motives, in the 1990's.

What llama? I didn't notice it at first, and am sure that in person it just looks like a small, fuzzy friend.

Love the combination of colors -- blues, green, gray -- with the colorful pillows. The room has freshness and simplicity. Well done.

Love, love, love this room! I'm so jealous of your windows and fireplace. Could you tell me where the curtains, the bedding, and the bed came from? Great job.

Glad I saw this before hitting the Saturday yard sales. It probably saved me money, though I may have developed a long-lasting fear of upholstered furniture. Cockroaches behind the mirror --- nightmare material.

Grown up Legos! Hilarious. LOL.

And yes, a new Nobel prize category is in order. Any idea what to call it?

I second -- or by now it's third or fourth -- eliz's idea that "Small Trick, Big Difference should be a a running feature on AT."

From the photographs, the changes weren't immediately obvious to me either, but I bet they are noticeable in the actual space. Best of all...they were free.

@kariwk -- Glad kitty is better. I love my cats and my vet. The bills, not so much. No shopping for me either.

From the AllModern website: "Whenever an object is produced in the Iittala factory, it has to feel, last and work like Iittala. The tactility and high quality of the materials can be felt with your bare hands. Objects like that, will work anytime, anywhere with anything. Objects like that will never be thrown away."

The painted plates are fresh and pretty, and they are hers, but I sill wish they were cheap glass plates and not quality glass.

I can imagine the Antiques Roadshow appraisal several decades from now: "These are plates in a classic design from a well-known factory in Finland. However, it appears that they were painted at some time. As you know, condition affects value..."

That being said, I think I'll go paint the Tiffany Ice Rock crystal salad plates I got at a yardsale for 1$5.
