10 Inspiring Uses of Subway Tiles in the Kitchen
5/24/12 5:04 PM

Thank you for these - though all similar, I think it's valuable to see the minute differences and how the grout colors look in each situation. I'd gotten a little paranoid that my plan to do white tiles with white grout would look hospital-ish, but I don't find that to be the case at all, in the photos. I definitely don't think the colored tile looks "dirty," but I just don't care for that much pattern definition, at least not for my plan.

The only one I don't care for is #4, with the square tiles. Offset like this, for some reason it looks too artificial.

I looked at that Rustoleum kit at Home Depot and am under the impression you can simply buy the various components for less than half the cost of the kit.

Here's a good example of darker grout looking fab with white tiles; it goes great with the black handles, and gives a vintage-y look to an otherwise sleek kitchen. Big congratulations! Oh, and I LOVE the dark floor with the whole scene.

Really liking #11 and pleasantly surprised to see it's by American Standard (why? just sentiment, I guess. But I'm ripping out my 70's sink and toilet and replacing them with vintage colored fixtures to match the tub - found them on CL, only $40 for the pair!!! And they're Am. Std, and the design is just so beautiful...)

I think the piece is AWESOME, completely! Unfortunately I recognize that fabric from my grandmother's reupholstered sofa, and it's horribly uncomfortable; else I'd say just leave it as is! Except maybe beef up the one saggy cushion. I bet the fabric will last another 100 years, though. Isn't there any way to dye fabric in place? and then just change the uncomfy fabric on the seat cushions. Crazy, I know... but I can so relate to your liking this one-of-a-kind find!

LOVE that beadboard ceiling, and what a boon that must have felt like, to discover how much more height it gave you!!! And the reclaimed-wood countertops are simply amazing!

What babyfishmouth said. However, I do appreciate the tip on cleaning the keyboard with tape! Durn cat hair...

I have for years used the "stash everything in a box and put it in the closet" method. But it really needs to be renamed "stash [yada yada] and then LATER, take it back out and deal with it." Cause out of sight, out of mind is so very very true.

Thanks for the list; I didn't know about nipping buds to encourage more root growth.

A few years ago I bought two INCREDIBLY colored azaleas from a big box store. They never bloomed again. I assume they way-overfertilize them to lure in the saps like me.

Another big-box experience was a seemingly great price on gallon perennials. When I took them out of the pots, they were simply quart-sizes that had been place in the larger pots and surrounded with more soil. People who do stuff like these two ripoffs can go die, as far as I'm concerned.

I have a temporary loft bed because I've removed my base kitchen cabinets for a remodel and needed a storage place till I can reuse them in the guest cottage. I LOVE it! Found a two-step mysterious staircase at the thriftstore for $5, perfect. It's great being at window-level to look out in the mornings!

BTW, AT, thank you SO MUCH for the arrows on the slideshows! It makes a tremendous difference.

You know, I'm just so surprised that in situations like these, one virtually never sees lapeyre (AKA alternate-tread) stairs. They take up only about as much room as a ladder does, yet feel like steps in both the ascent and descent. Some entrepeneurial type could do well by manufacturing a kit. Course, most counties aren't up to speed in including them in code; but as we see, many of these railless designs can't possibly be to code anyway!

The closet's beautiful but does that display trick where all the clothes match the decor, and there are unrealistically few of them.

I don't disagree with any of these points. But am I the only one whose experience is that the very best massages ever are given by non-professionals? I've had many a pro massage, some better, some very insensitive. But all have just followed a formula - do this to that muscle group, then that to this muscle group - rather than relying on the infinitely more effective intuition-in-the-moment. Glad to get that off my chest. And the massage schools in most states have managed to push through legislation barring those who don't use their mechanistic models from being able to work. Lots of incendiary fears. Yes of course you can hurt someone if you press too hard in the wrong place. Umm, do they mean like the licensed practitioners who've given me massive headaches due to not following their intuitive touch?

How to Get a Massage (Seriously...)

Definitely. The people right next door to my elementary school put one in and I used to gaze in wonder and longing through the cracks in the fence.

If I ever get a pool though I'm going with the kind @Dearmisha mentions, the ones surrounded by plants that act as natural filters. If you find some good pix of those, I'd love to see them!

LOVE @Kaete's comment about her pond & snakes and so forth! LOL!

I totally agree with the fridge-on-the-counter, for short fridges, who wants to be leaning over every single time you open it? I'd do it that way even if I did have floor space!

I recently changed an office room over to a dressing room. Ain't it grand? My desk is now in the sitting room.
