Another vote for Google Voice. My initial reason for getting GV was to have a local area code for applying for jobs while I was in college. Then I started using it as a primary contact number, especially for classmates with whom I would be working on a project or two for one class only. I love that I can block certain numbers and report spam. Why You Should Keep a Pay-As-You-Go Phone As a 2nd Line |

I don't love the color, but I love the design. Many of the designs for shipping containers I've seen give me the impression of single-occupancy or for young-couples with no children. This, on the other hand, seems like it would make a good, and kind of fun, home for a small family. 8 Shipping Containers Equal 1 Family Home Designboom |

My only fear would be that I would somehow forget that there's something hidden inside the old remote and recycle it to free myself of old clutter. D: Use an Old Remote to Hide Cash & Keys Real Simple |

I'm not a fan of pink (or any bright colored) appliance, but I think this particular pink fridge looks good, especially in the first picture. I think the reasons I find it appealing is because 1) the fridge's pink color is rather toned down IMO, and 2) the rest of the kitchen is not brightly colored. As a renter in SF, I don't care much for the actual property, but more so my personal safety and belongings. I figure that if an earthquake or a tsunami hits, it's probably better to get the hell out of dodge, therefore, I made a get-out-of-dodge bag that contains the very basics, such as a small emergency kit (first aid items, glow stick, emergency blanket, etc), important documents (mostly related to school and work since I'm a student), flashlight & batteries, some snack bars and a bottle or two of water. It might not be an emergency/disaster kit to survive the zombie apocalypse, but it will at least get me through an emergency evacuation and it is much more affordable for your average broke college student. I think a house tour would be vastly useful as well. Even if there is no natural disaster or home fire, it may come in handy if you live in an area where theft is common. I rent a room in a three-story house (group level is the garage) in San Francisco. There used to be 7 people living in this house with their own individual heaters. I'm sure this was not the most efficient method to stay warm in the SF cold, but our landlady shut off the central heat so it was our only choice. Now that many of the former tenants have moved out and the house has been foreclosed, the central heat has been turned back on. I find that the central heating doesn't heat up the house very well, especially in my room. What I have started to do is turn the central heating up to 70 or 71 in the mornings, so that my housemate and I won't be shivering, but once it get to that point, I turn it back down to 66 or 67 degrees. If it's just me at home, then I leave it and turn on my space heater only when I want my room to be warmer. It seems less wasteful than turning on the central heating just to heat up my dinky room. I don't have a problem with electronics while still in bed (except listening to my iPod to psych myself up for the work/school day) since the first thing I want to do in the morning is to get rid of that nasty morning breath feeling. Then, I brew a pot of coffee and eat breakfast. I usually turn on my laptop somewhere between washing my face and sitting down to eat my breakfast, and then check my email, check the weather, bring up the bus arrival times, and listen to more music for about 30-45 minutes, depending on whether or not I slept in. Although this may seem to be a huge distraction that may or may not make me late for work/class, I find that it helps me keep track of time better because I am starting a the computer screen and the clock is right there in the corner of the screen. I've actually attempted no-computer/internet mornings a few times, and it just felt weird having to check the time on my phone or iPod. Is Screen Time in the Morning a Bad Thing? |

I wash laundry every week and I tend to wash all my clothes together in one small load. I know it's not good to wash jeans with t-shirts and whatnot, but I'd rather not do a separate load for two or three pairs of jeans (yes, I wear only two or three pairs of jeans per week). It just feels like a waste of water & electricity. I also wait till I have amassed at least four or five towels before I wash a load of towels. And when I do wash a load of towels, I usually throw my jeans in with the towels and I have not had any issues with lint on my jeans. Tips and Tricks: The Art of Doing Laundry |

It's good to see that Apple competitors are taking larger steps in their innovation of technology and making their computers lighter and thinner without loss of computing power. I hope that these companies will be able to enter the ultra lightweight, ultra thin laptop market without issues because I'd rather see more competition in this market than a monopoly. Plus, consumers will have more options if they are looking to buy a ultra thin and lightweight laptop. Not every consumer wants to buy Apple products. That is so ridiculously cool. I wish I had one of those when I first moved up to San Francisco. It would've saved me so much time (because I had to buy all my furniture separately - seriously, my mattress was on the floor for an entire year before I got a bed frame) and space. This makes me wish I had a basement. Growing up, my mom would cook outdoors. Clean up was pretty easy and the smells from cooking would not stick to everything in the house. Cool Move: Put the Kitchen in the Basement |

I tend to buy what's on sale, but I prefer Classico and Prego red sauces. I love Classico for its thick sauces with chunks of tomato and veggies. I love saving Classico jars too. They may great containers for dry goods, such as coffee beans. Prego is not as thick, but it'll suffice in a pinch. I particularly like Prego's Italian sausage and garlic red sauce. I also save Prego jars. :) What Kind of Jarred Red Sauce Do You Use? |

My parents recently moved, but they still own the house I grew up in. In fact, they've rented out our old home. I still have a room at the new house, but it doesn't feel like my room. Whenever I go home for a weekend or a week, it feels like I'm traveling and I am just bunking at a hotel, only without having to pay for room & board. All my stuff from the old house was moved over to the new place, but because I wasn't there for the move, I have lost track of a lot of my stuff. After finishing my undergrad, I may move back in with my parents, so maybe then I can make it my room. Have Your Parents Moved? |

I would never rent an apartment that felt moist. I live in San Francisco and have seen a bunch of "in-law" apartments and rooms for rent that feel absolutely disgusting because of all the moisture in the air. The carpeted floors and lack of properly insulation did not help either. The place I live in now is not an in-law, but seems to have poor insulation and the high levels of moisture in the air causes food to grow mold super quick. Mold especially loves to grow in the bathroom as well even though we turn on the ventilation during and keep it on after each shower. I Would Never Rent An Apartment That: Reader Survey |

Every since I started doing laundry, my family has owned a washer/dryer set in our home and it is extremely convenient to be able to do my laundry at any time I wanted to do laundry. It was also very convenient to wash my laundry, and then take it outside and hang dry it in our backyard. Then, I went off to college and was forced to do laundry at the laundromat. Not only is it a pain to have to do laundry within a specific time frame and to lug all my laundry three blocks (no car nor bus; just walking), but I can easily rack up on average $20 a month doing laundry at the laundromat. It may be convenient to be able to wash & dry multiple loads at the same time, but it's just not worth it for me compared to the benefits of having on-site laundry.
