One thing that's made a difference for me--and this might be heresy--is not using our crisper drawers. I never noticed much prolonging of shelf life or quality with them, at least in our particular, older fridge, but I did notice they were where produce went to get pushed to the bottom of the drawer and die. Now I use one for storage of some of those little jar/bottle kind of cooking ingredients that otherwise want to roll all over the fridge and one for a veggie item or two I know I wont forget (like a big bag of baby carrots). It was hard to give up the under-cabinet space in my tiny bathroom, but I agree that keeping cleaning supplies in the bathroom has made all the difference for me. Instead of having to run to the kitchen and get distracted on the way by 10 other things or just not bother to do it, I can just grab a paper towel and take care of it right then. Also makes it easy if, for example, friends unexpectedly come back to our place after dinner to excuse myself to go to the bathroom and give things a 60-second wipe-down just to make sure nothing's too gross since my bathroom is also the guest bathroom. My SIL did this (I think it was a coworker's daughters or something) when she hosted my other SIL's engagement party and I can say that as one of the usual default dishwashers in the family, it was AWESOME not to have to do that at the end of the night. These are all lovely ideas for teacher gifts--my poor mom gets more breads/cookies/things that will either spoil or take up fridge space during the holidays from her students than she and my dad want or can use. These are all relatively healthier and will all keep til later in the year when she'd be happy to pull them out and enjoy them! I dislike the term for the reasons you stated, even though my husband insists on using it and it makes me cringe every time (he's not so much on paying attention to the connotation of words). I do kinda like the suggestion of "food nerd." But mostly I like that episode of Portlandia...thanks for giving me a Tuesday afternoon chuckle just thinking of it. Are You a Foodie? Reformer. I thought quite cautious, since for our first Thanksgiving hosting I decided to only try to change the most egregious dish: marshmallow sweet potato casserole (though eventually we plan on ditching the turkey and all his friends). Apparently radical, though, since I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with my mother, who just couldn't comprehend what other way I could possibly fix them. Oooooh Emmi, I agree about the dogs! People need to keep in mind that no one else thinks your dog is as adorable as you do and might not enjoy being jumped on or licked. Especially for dressy occasions when I might be wearing a skirt with tights, I don't particularly appreciate having my hose run by your pup's claws! What Are the Essentials of Good Table Manners? |

Pingping--I agree with you to a certain extent. I actually draw a line between child labor and slave labor sharper than most are comfortable with. While, in an ideal world, kids wouldn't have to work, in the current real world many have to. Until we can get things to a point where they can just go to school, I'd rather they sew a soccer ball than be a prostitute, so to that extent I'd never boycott something just because it involved child labor per se. Plan, plan, plan. But that said, I'm not into mise en place at all (all those dishes!). More of a planner to maximize time--what needs to start first and what can be done while something else is simmering--and to maximize dishwashing--if I measure the sugar first, I can use the same teaspoon for the soy sauce, etc. Really, I am lazy, therefore I plan. Yes on the cupcakes. The whole cupcake thing needs to die now that everyone who ever saw a romantic comedy is opening their own cupcake shop. Got dragged to one the other day for a $6 cupcake that justified its unimaginativeness by being the size of my head...so then it was neither good nor a cupcake.
