The yoga studio where I attended my teacher training & practice regularly did one of their walls like this! There's a studio in NY (Dana Flynn) where our studio owner visited during a workshop & was inspired by their graffiti wall!

My grandparents used a POD a few years ago & loved it. I've moved cities a few times now and rented a truck (less than a days driving each time) or trailer and done the hard stuff ourselves. Our next move- probably next summer will have us taking less stuff than either of the previous trips. For sure. I've become much more of a minimalist than ever before in my life despite growing up with hoarding parents puppeting the scarcity their war era parents experienced. You'll be a better person for it without so much stuff. It's quite freeing <3 good luck!

We have wire mesh baskets that pull out of the bottom shelf of our 5x5 expedit, but things like screwdrivers wouldn't do so well there. I've seen quite a few storage type boxes at Winners (TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Homesense) so I would suggest keeping an eye out in places like that. I love many of the other ideas such as card catalogs or vintage metal boxes though (but it depends on your decor of course). Scope out antique spots- good luck!

We've had a lot of luck convincing our landlords (we rent the basement suite in a house) that fixing/replacing/painting exhibit A will preserve their investment. We've done lots of little things on our own as well (we've been in there for 2.5 years) to help make it a better space. Teamwork!

They developed the basement with the intention of renting it while they lived in the house, however they aren't exactly the handiest of folks... our bedroom track lighting was attached to the suspended ceiling framework with a ziptie, screwed into said framework with the wrong screws, so it eventually shorted out, our countertop is "made out of" laminate flooring (replacement date tomorrow- woohoo!), crooked door frames etc... Just remember, it could always be worse.

I haven't bought paper towels in a few years, but every time I have napkins from a drive through run or something (not often!) I use them for bacon. Otherwise, I use one of a handful of greasy dishtowels dedicated for that specific purpose. I think if we didn't have a washer & dryer in the house my approach would be a bit different (though I can't imagine those circumstances!). Before we went PTFree, we did opt for the 7th generation recycled towels, and definitely didn't go through a lot.

We've been considering trying out the handkerchief route to eliminate the average one box per year that we go through of Kleenex, but that's a whole different topic...

Moral of the story: there's always room for improvement! <3

vintage mason jars: I just counted about 50 in the kitchen full of dry beans, nuts & seeds, flours, olive oil, bacon grease... not to mention the ones in the cold room full (and empty from) canning tomatoes & jam!

I agree with MrBigglesworth that potato starch is often not as easy to work with. I use arrowroot as an alternative to corn starch for things like thickening a gravy for example. Good luck :)

One of the tips taught at some of the pineapple farms on Maui involves twisting off the stem, then leaving the fruit upside down for a day to let the juices redistribute. A pineapple grows on the ground for a couple of years, so gravity takes its toll! A much juicier pineapple results- yum!

I don't understand why anyone would hate a kitchenaid quite honestly... my guess is that she's not much of a kitchen person? I think the best way for that mixer to win her heart is with the ice cream maker attachment (frequently on sale on amazon). Mashed potatoes also happen in that mixer along with plenty of baked goods & meatballs fairly often! Make tasty things in it- how could she possibly hate it then??

This is my go-to recipe: http://simplysugarandglutenfree.com/perfect-bread/ (a word of advice is to definitely follow the directions on how to cool it!) but buy Udi's whole grain when I don't have the time (which sadly, is more often than not). Also, ANY gf bread is better after it's toasted. Good luck!

The container definitely looks smaller than 5x8oz! Brita came out with a glass pitcher a few years ago in the UK but it wasn't available in North America at all. I tried to get one shipped over with no luck. Even so, not everyone has access to a) Whole Foods or b)anywhere that recycles things like this. I can't even recycle plastics where I live now. The recycling depot doesn't even take glass, I have to take it elsewhere... so sad.

still broken....

Our cupboard & counter space in our rental is impossibly minimal, so we bought the 5 x 5 cubby expedit shelving unit from ikea (http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/00208646/) which houses many of our dishes & serves as open shelving. The 2 cupboards below the counters house pots & pans & storage containers, with the 3 drawers above them containing the lids to said containers, cutlery & misc utensils. It's a mix of all of the survey options without the chaos, really.

The chaos lies on top of the counters where the dirty dishes take up with little prep space we have... what I wouldn't give for a dishwasher in this place...

Yes! Gluten free breakfast minis would be a killer post as well (could totally double as low-carb as well) Breakfast is the hardest meal of the day for people avoiding grains (and there's more & more people opting for GF daily!)
