I understand what you are saying and I agree that paying to have your house staged in some markets is not the way to go BUT you should ALWAYS stage your home.
(I'm sure you would agree) That means having an OBJECTIVE friend (with some taste) come over and help you to see your property through the public eye.

Clear out the clutter and ARRANGE EVERYTHING NEATLY, even your spice cabinet.
Take out all but the good looking stuff, turn labels forward. Make vignettes to showcase how areas of your home can be used. Simple but can mean big dividends!
