Wow, I wish I hadn't heard whose room this is but it is fascinating.. and kind of refreshing not to see something totally hip

Be really careful, I've seen/heard horror stories from people tearing the lathe and plaster off of one wall, only to have the other side of the wall crumble as well and I don't think your neighbors would appreciate that.

These entries are great, but they are formatted in a way that's messing up my google reader in that there's an extra scroll bar from left to right, perhaps because the pictures are wider? Specifically the room for color posts, not the entire blog. Am I the only one experiencing this?

like vintagejenta, my cabinet is the same and though I'd toyed with painting it white instead of replacing it, a bright color is so much more tempting now

ha! I love it!! Tiny bathrooms are a great place to be wacky and bold with designs that would be overwhelming in larger rooms.

agreed Sophia. I never sleep on my shams because even if I wash them religiously, my pillow cases will yellow from hair oil and I want them to be more easily cleaned or replaced

I LOVE IT! I would love to live near that house, it would make me smile every time I look at it. Normally I don't like eccentric exterior paint, but this is an exception. If it were always done this well I'd love to live in a neighborhood full of quirky homes.

Thank you everyone for your advice, To answer some questions and comments:

I do not use the fireplace, it was inspected and deemed not safe for wood fires

I took the pictures while moving, so there is a large amount of clutter I am much neater than this!

The wall on the right has a large entryway to my dining room. I thought I mentioned this but apparently not.

I save really personal style decisions for paint and furnishings. I'll invest in a piece of furniture that just calls my name, even if it's in a really un-neutral style, but my house is an investment so I'm always thinking of resale value. I don't go for trends unless I love them anyway.

Unless you have a craftsman style home or something with a LOT of millwork and built in cabinetry, shelves, etc. I say PAINT IT!! And if you do some research to avoid brush strokes or paint filling in any molding you have, it will look fantastic

I've hung LACK shelves on plaster walls in two apartments (at least one of these times with brick behind it). I agree with Brainy, though, my walls were already in horrible condition so I didn't feel bad hanging floating shelves on them, but if yours are nice and you like your landlord I would wait.

In my case I left the gap and the shelves fared well. But, you could put some shims behind the bracket on the side that's coming away from the wall. pre-drill all your holes and insert your tapcons or anchors or what you plan to use. insert the screws in a few of the holes that are flush with the wall, wedge some shims into the gap and finish inserting screws.

I'm not an expert, this is just my guess as to what would work.
