I have a few air plants from Air Plants Supply Co and they've done alright. Per the instructions from their mothership, I soak them in a bowl of water for 30-60 minutes once a week. I live in the DC area and this works for our climate. Given this bathing requirement, I don't think tying the air plants up by a string in the window is a very good idea. It will be cumbersome to keep untying and retying the plant, not to mention the fact that it doesn't look that great.
