bleach, formaldehyde, e. coli. So I guess eating them is out.

The baking soda mixture will badly scratch silver. Instead, dissolve baking soda and salt (you have to experiment a bit to get the correct proportions) into water that's in an aluminum foil-lined container, and dip your tarnished silver in that. I use distilled water because my tap water, which comes from a well, has a high mineral content. I also use those aluminum-foil baking pans you can buy at the grocery store instead of the sheets of foil.

Despite its name, Murphy's Oil Soap is NOT good for cleaning wood, especially valuable furniture. Recently, someone on here provided a recipe for cleaning wood furniture, which is much better:
two parts linseed oil
two parts turpentine
one part vinegar
one part denatured alcohol

I don't know about the other "tips" provided here, but it might be a good idea to test these out on your own stuff before telling others to try them on theirs.

This is a tough one. Everything in the room is timeless. It could be from any decade. I love the airiness of the room, and how every piece of furniture balances the room so nicely.

The hanging fabric over one of the rafters makes me think the room is from the 1960s.

By the way, thanks for bringing back this feature. It's one of my favorites.

I agree about taking your own photos of your house.

But the number-one lesson I've learned from my buying and selling experiences is that realtors lie and will make things up if they don't know the answer to a question, and when the phrase, "Trust me, I'm working for you" is uttered from a realtor's lips, know that the opposite is true, in spades!

Maybe all realtors aren't like this, but this has been my experience in every buying and selling situation I've been involved with. I've also found that real estate lawyers aren't much better.

Good question! I laughed out loud when I finally realized what you were referring to.

To add to your observation: The guy in that picture is perched so awkwardly on whatever that thing he's trying to sit on is, he looks like he's got some kind of painful medical condition. Every time I see that photo, it makes me want to squirm.

I recall being in a similar situation, but with one big difference. I had close friends who were moving out of the country. At the time, her husband was traveling a lot so I helped her with the packing, and the yard sale, and we ate almost every meal together, I even ended up adopting their 11-year-old cat who they couldn't take with them. I really enjoyed our time together, but once they left, I was devastated. I missed them both so much.

BTW, "god is in the details," who didn't even use the idiom in the correct context, can go fly a kite.

If the living room is any indication, your house looks beautiful. The detail on the fireplace mantel is lovely. I had similar issues with my living room, which has lots of windows, a fireplace, and two doorways. I tried a number of layouts, and the one that seems to work best is floating the sofa in front of the fireplace, which makes the fireplace the focal point of the room. I'm still working out TV location, but for now, it's sitting on a small stand to the right of the fireplace, and I'm not ruling out the idea of mounting it above. Only you would know if that option would work in your house.

I've never been a fan of switching the living room with the dining room. I've been in homes that have done this, and having the dining room as the first room you enter looks ridiculous to me. Also, you won't be able to fully enjoy the fireplace in a room dominated by a dining room table.

These look neither lower nor softer, rather stiffer and uncomfortable. And I'm sure they're ridiculously expensive.

I thought for sure it was going to be a video of a crackling fire, which would have been somewhat amusing, but this just looks odd. In fact, it calls attention to the TV rather than making it less obtrusive.

Haven't read all the other comments, so I apologize if this has already been suggested, and I don't know how extensively you want to renovate. But what I'd do is remove the wall between the bedroom and the living area, move the kitchen to the back wall, and partition the space to the far right into two bedrooms, which will make them closer to the bathroom too.

I don't get the "they allow natural light into the room" comment the OP made. Where's the natural light coming from? Is there a skylight in the hall?

Another confusing comment is the OP asked for ideas that won't interfere with dinner (that isn't fragile). Is there a lot of physical violence during the dinner hour—food and plate throwing—that would put breakables in jeopardy? Just curious.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I was looking at the chairs on Ikea's UK website and came across this, which I think is really pretty.

It's not on the US site, which always makes me wonder why and how Ikea chooses the products it makes available in different countries.

The Latin phrase on the chairs means "love one another." I don't believe the insignia is from a college fraternity, more likely a religious group, probably Catholic. You might be able to remove them without having to refinish the entire chair. I'd use Citristrip www.wmbarr.com/citristrip/default.aspx, which is nontoxic.

The chairs are beautiful and certainly a steal at $50. If you like them, who cares who made them?

Why not use something like Tempaper to cover the cabinets? It's wallpaper that's made to be removed, and it comes in some interesting patterns. www.tempaperdesigns.com/collection2012.nxg
And since you don't have too many cabinets, the project won't be too expensive. You might also want to consider Contac paper, but it's not as creative as the other stuff.

It must be nice to have so much disposable income that you can pretty much gut a more than adequate kitchen, including its new-looking appliances, and replace it with something that's not radically different, not particularly creative, and that will look dated in about 5 years.
