The original tile-work is absolutely brilliant. The thing that's really off about this room is the (single) paint color on the walls and window trim. Its not at all consistent with the bathroom color schemes from the 20s--and doesn't do anything to compliment the absolutely brilliant tile-work (which I find absolutely ironic, considering this is a Room for Color contest).

Do some research, bring back the proper wall and wood-trim colors for this room (and it certainly isn't a monotone beigy-white).

Oy... unless Target is really careful about severely limiting availability of all these items over the long-haul, over-saturation of these neurotic patterns is going to really burn people out--ultimately making these a really tacky "main-stream trend".

Summers have gotten so much hotter in Colorado over the last 15 or so years. Summers *used* to be mild with light rain showers to keep things nicely watered and cooler. Not so much anymore--the summers now are really hot.

*chuckles* Well, except for today, its really nice, very cool and overcast--enjoy it while it lasts! :-)

Boulder has some pretty eclectic architecture--hopefully you'll be able to find some good information in an archive!

Having lived in Norway before for a few years, there were several IKEAs--one at the north end of town and the other at the south end of town--with regularly scheduled IKEA buses that came every 15 minutes.

Now back in Colorado, I've had terrible withdrawals and look forlornly at items on the IKEA website that can only be purchased in their stores.

But... this fall, a new IKEA will be opening up in south Denver. Yay!! Can't wait! Can't wait! :-D *happy dance*

Oy. Well, if the comments here regarding the floor tile are any indication of current 'tastes'... then there's absolutely no need to remodel any of the bathrooms or the kitchen in my place that were originally done in the late 70s.

I suppose if one waits long enough, they can save themselves a tremendous amount of money on remodeling since stuff comes back into style again.

I guess its true that even the ugliest fashions always come back in style eventually. Heh. *chuckles and shakes my head*

Oh, I LOVE home-made ice cream!

I have two ice cream makers and went nuts experimenting and making all sorts of different ice creams last summer (using Kalona Super Natural low-heat pasteurization heavy whipped cream)...

- honey-rose with walnuts
- pomegranate with dark chocolate pieces
- thai coffee
- cilantro, mint and lime
- root beer
- spumoni
- mango with passion-fruit swirl
- lemon zest
- sweet cream
- white chocolate and five nuts
- black walnut and maple
- chocolate malt with toffee bits
- strawberry and lime
- dulce la leche
- red-bean
- andean blackberry
- spicy mexican chocolate
(and some others I can't recall...)

The one thing I can emphatically suggest is to add xanthan gum to ensure a really wonderful texture and consistency to the ice cream (but use very very little of it). I found a good guide on adding xanthan gum to ice cream recipes awhile back: http://www.ehow.com/how_5701526_add-xanthan-gum-ice-cream.html

Ice cream makers also make the most delicious frozen slushies. Experiment with different fruit juices and enjoy the exquisite brain freeze when its super hot outside. Yum! :-D

Hard water really, really sucks!

You REALLY need a water softener.

We've got extremely hard (well) water, and that hard water has destroyed every sink, faucet, toilet (and a lot of the pipes/plumbing) in our place.

We got a very good quality water softener (WaterMax) and after making sure our hard water issues really were resolved, then we replaced all those fixtures (and a lot of the pipe/plumbing).

Next up is to get a whole-house reverse-osmosis system to replace the under-sink one we have in the kitchen.

And all the commercials in Norway look like this, too. Then again, that's been the 'decor sensibility' of Scandinavia for decades: modern and contemporary.

But c'mon, who really wants to look at a commercial of a home furnished with country-duck decor and American oak furniture with plaid upholstery? It would not convey an appealing message at all to a vast majority of people.

What a beautifully thoughtful post. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I've been kind of in a surreal fog the last few days--wandering into the kitchen...stopping to ponder that I have electricity, I have food, I have water... all these "basic" conveniences that have been suddenly ripped away from so many people in Japan.

Have deep appreciation for those things, and show empathy and compassion for those who do not through positive action.

Be well.
