Ah, but interestingly, it is a faux pas to touch the fruit in France, no? You are supposed to let the fruit vendor select the perfectly ripe fruits for you. Funny that the same is not true for cheese. Why Parisians Poke Their Camembert |

I love it! I've always wanted to do a small world nursery, and I suppose I could have, but somehow the orange paint in our office-turned-nursery just said "giraffe" instead... Ellie's 'It's a Small World After All' Room My Room |

Yes! We always used to have one with us, we kept it in our carry-on sized suitcase that we always took in the car. But then I carried it on the plane and TSA threw it away. It wasn't anything special to look at, just a cheapy little one, but we got it on our last trip to Paris to open all the bottles of wine. I was about 6 months pregnant and definitely cried all the way from security to my gate... Travel Tip: Pack a Corkscrew! |

I should add that this kind of display seems to invite spontaneous and casual interaction more than a traditional side-by-side, spine-out storage. Many of my guests enjoy pulling a book down and perusing through, often while I'm cooking, and I enjoy discussing my favorite boos and recipes with them. And if anything encourages exploration, exposure, and discussion, then it's even better in my book! Would You Ever Store Your Cookbooks Facing Out Like This? Kitchen Inspiration |

I do this! For two reasons; space and inspiration. We installed a narrow book ledge along one wall of our dining room, next to our kitchen, and down the hall. It is a narrow space and a walkway, with weird and narrow corners next to a door frame and kitchen, so regular shelves would have been too wide. We store my toddler daughter's books on the bottom shelves, where she can easily see and reach them, and I store my prettiest and most used and inspiring books on the top shelves. I keep my craft and sewing books there, because I sew in the dining room, and my favorite cookbooks are closest to the kitchen. We love the way it looks, it adds a lively and ever-changing element to the decor. I'd mix in frames but I have too many books! And to Pi's narrow-minded and unimaginative point, ALL of our guests have loved the shelves and display and everyone comments on how inspiring it is to see such pretty book covers and how it would make them want to use their cookbooks more and cook delicious things all the time. And it does! Would You Ever Store Your Cookbooks Facing Out Like This? Kitchen Inspiration |

I'm saving this to read during my overnight baby-feeding sessions because there is too much great info to digest while my kids are clamping for attention during the day. Thank you for writing about the money part, even though it can be a sensitive issue. Yay for Mandy!! I was saying to my husband just this morning that Mandy is super awesome and I wish she lived nearby because I'd love to hang out with her and think my daughter would have a great time playing with her super adorable kiddo. I started using silken tofu in my smoothies when I couldn't eat dairy, it really helps keep me full until lunchtime! My very favorite, go-to smoothie is 1 banana, 1/5-1/4 block of silken tofu, a bunch of frozen berries (pre-packaged berry medley), and 4-ish oz pomegranate juice. Sometimes I throw in some oats, yogurt, coconut oil, chia or flax seeds, when I need some extra filling and fat. 20 Smoothie Tips, Hints, and Recipes |

I've been collecting images that inspire me since I was a high-schooler, taping them to my bedroom wall. That evolved into a binder where I stored pages torn from magazines and catalogs, and organized them by room, function, category, etc. Pinterest is just the most current form, for me. It takes up much less physical space in my house and I can browse tons of stuff more easily, including what my friends are inspired by. I guess I just don't have that inferiority complex, because none of this makes me feel like my life isn't good enough. It just inspires me to be more creative and to look at everything around me more creatively. And when I have an idea for something, I have TONS of inspiration at my fingertips to help me make it awesome! Online Inspiration & Curation: An Addiction to Yearning? |

We always try to have something appropriately festive for dinner during the opening ceremonies. I'm pregnant and don't feel like cooking much these days, so we settled on Indian take-out! I'm not one to quibble with the USOC's associate director of food and nutrition but I was hoping for some more nutrients in this "nutrient-rich" dish. I'm sure it's delish, but is essentially water, chicken and rice noodles. I don't think jalapeƱo and green onion add a whole lot nutrients. That said, I'd love to see more recipes from the USOC training center! I wonder if they share them anywhere? The Most Popular Dish for Olympic Athletes in Summer 2012: Can You Guess? |

I love a cookbook with good headnotes, especially one where the author brings a special voice to the table. It makes me feel like I'm sharing the meal with them, and makes me feel more intimately connected to the food I'm making (or dreaming of making). I think that's especially attractive to me because I don't have a rich collection of family recipes passed down through the ages. Considering the Recipe Headnote: When Is It Too Much? |

TRACYASHLEY, me too!! I got mine as a birthday present in 5th grade, so I could be responsible for waking myself up. Except mine was the ugly beige rectangle version. It was always set to KMEL 106.1, I used to wake up to Michael Jackson, TLC, Sir-Mix-Alot, Mary J. Blige, the Looniez, etc., etc. I can't believe the lyrics I was singing at 10... I used it through college (when I developed a bad snoozing habit), and until I was a married woman. I was pretty devastated when it broke. I replaced it with some CD-playing dud which lasted only a year or two, and then my husband and I both got the updated Dream Machine with double alarm functions. Though we still use our iPhone alarms, we really love the Dream Machines and I hope they last as long as my original did. Product Nostalgia: An Ode to the (Discontinued!) Sony Dream Machine |
