It might be easier using tape-the template made her edges bleed quite noticeably.

(These comments are hilarious. I love the whole 'pulling wifely rank' and 'paint 'em anyway'. As if the kitchen decor is more important then their marriage.. )I think your kitchen is gorgeous and it may as well be the mindset to have if you can't change it too much. Personally I would paint the walls a warm caramel shade and then get a new light fixture and window shades and oilcloth for the floor in black. Oh and +1 for removing the wavy wooden window valance. My folks just took that off their similar kitchen and it made a world of difference. Congrats on your new home!

These are cool and refreshing, very far from "granny-chic" in my eyes!

I would fold clothes there as well. That or install a giant fishtank, if the counter is well-supported.

Going from bowls on the floor to a tray filled with tchotchkes on a table is interesting but is it really worthy of a B&A? Seems to me the standards have gone down for what qualifies. But hey! At least now you don't have to bend over to organize your man jewelry! Good job!

No. In my previous house all the ceilings were painted the same color as the walls and it was completely overwhelming and so refreshing to return them to white.

I can't say I'm a fan of yellow, it just seems far too energetic for bedrooms but I do appreciate how sunny the last example is.

I like the wall color a lot for a bedroom! Otherwise, I'd like to see a few more pictures to really be able to appreciate the 'after' aspect of this makeover.

I'd never heard of this before this post. How cool! I'd also be interested to know how it stands up to a damp cloth-if you've ever had a toddler on the loose with an ice cream cone it's a necessity to have easy to clean furniture.

with regard to resale value, if I saw this I would assume they used leftover roofing materials and wonder what else was done on the cheap. I'd pass on it.

Fantastic! The only thing I would do is add legs/casters/something to get that bottom shelf up off the floor-shelves directly on the ground seem to collect all the dust floating their way...

Re: guests with food issues. I can't see it being a challenge when a guest shows up who doesn't drink alcohol. I mean, come on, really? Water with fruit in it? If you're hosting a meal and can't manage to have fruit juice or a soft drink on hand for those who are driving/have to get up early then you are a bad host!

I agree, every department store sells inexpensive blackout or foam-backed curtains. Add in tie-backs for light during the day and you're good to go.

What an amazing job! Your folks made such a bright and inviting space! We restored a century old Victorian so I can just imagine the amount of hard labour that went into this space. Their reward is just beautiful!
