I think that if you are approaching smudging with humility and the right intentions, there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. My best friend is also a "card carrying" First Nations (Canada) citizen and I know she would have no problem with you "stealing" this. She would want you to be informed and serious about it though and then happy that something from her traditions have been thoughtfully considered, respected and practiced by another person that was in need. Good luck, break ups are tough!

How do you find out about most estate sales? Company websites, Craigslist?

I agree with the fabric or tapestry. You could get some basic fabric and stencil some words or poetry over top. Or check Ebay for some cool old maps!

My alarm clock is set to my Ipod so I just put whatever song I want to wake up to on the night before. It's sooooooo much better than a screechy siren which just makes me want to hurl my alarm clock at the nearest wall.

I haven't converted to ebooks either because 1) staring at electronic devices for long periods of time hurts my eyes (even with glasses) 2) I like the tradition of actually having a paper book to hold, feel. Ebooks feel fleeting to me (not the industry, the actual story). Call me old fashioned :)

I've done it and it worked out fine (it was a super old school lamp too). I don't remember what kind of paint I used, it was definitely something cheap and not special at all...probably just depends on the lamp though.

People's reactions to CityKitty's comment are defensive because her initial comment was also defensive (rightly or wrongly..). If you really want people to think about a really valid issue like this one, you can't approach it by putting people on the defensive right off the bat.

I was focusing on the dog too!

Not a bad transformation, especially for a temporary fix. I would suggest getting rid of the frosted glass shades altogether and just having bare bulbs (if you can find some cool looking bulbs).
