Just add more color as accent - gray, blue, green - and the power of the red becomes less. I've got dark gray upholstery and a red wall and I added a bunch of blue accessories (pillow, throw, etc) and a small nod of red to pull it into the room and it all balances out nicely.

I hate it and read AT in spite of midcentury modern. Bring back Mission.

Quiet down the walls in that corner by painting out the
garage and closet doors/trim to match walls. Big colorful art in stairwell and maybe a quilt over the railing. Once the art is in place, then maybe the light fixture. I'd save painting the stairs as last resort.

Whatever art you get for stairwell; get a related piece living room. Treat the whole space as one. If you keep the wood the way it is, it'd be great if the artwork, pillows or rugs had some of that medium oak color in it. Using more of that color around the room will make it cohesive and more restful.

I agree about the rug. It's hard to think of a wooden table on top of the hardwood floor. A creamy rug would link with the colors in your kitchen and give you a separation from your wood floor.

I feel compelled to add another warning about touching it. I've never had any skin sensitivities at all; then I helped a friend weed a patch of lovely rue which put me in the emergency room with burning, weeping blisters! Maybe rub a tiny bit on your leg and wait a day...
