Something I'm going to try re: suggestion #2 is to have only as much seating as is aesthetically permissible in the space, plus a thigh-high stack of floor cushions. Not a solution for everyone, I admit, but I'm going to give it a shot and see how it works.

Using a smartphone as external storage, we're talking about an extra 8-32GB of extra storage. At that rate, you're probably better off just buying a couple 16GB USB flash drives. Or, if you've got a MacBook (Pro) from the last few years, you have a built-in SD card reader, so that's an option as well.

And an iPhone makes things a little complicated because of how it syncs with iTunes. Because Apple's sync method wants the data to live on the computer and then sync it to the iPhone, you have to be careful about maintaining media on your phone that doesn't live on your laptop, just in case you accidentally sync your phone to an empty iTunes library (which I did once, awhile back, and it wiped all the media from my phone).

Worth noting is POST, which is allegedly the first magazine designed specifically for the iPad (there's no print version). Its design is firmly rooted in traditional magazines, but it offers a level of interactivity you can't get on paper.

I also like the Edition29 apps, especially their Architecture and TheRides (cars) flavors. Solid layout with integrated audio and video.

I'm also a big fan of the Cool Hunting app. While not technically a magazine, the layout for the iPad version of the blog is decidedly interactive-magazine-like.

I find that on a matte screen, white shows dust and smudges best. But if your screen is Apple-style glossy, black (or off) works best because it reflects ambient light better, showing you just how dirty your screen is.

I agree with @WhereWeveBeen. Plex is great, just like Boxee and other XBMC derivatives. The advantage of Plex over the other XBMC distros is that it actually has media server functionality, not just streaming.

You can unplug an iOS device at any time (other than while syncing), as long as you don't have it set to "manually manage" music/files. If that option is selected, the iOS device WILL be mounted similar to an external drive and will have to be ejected prior to disconnecting.

Best to use something like App Cleaner or AppZapper to remove programs. Some will store additional data elsewhere on your Mac, not just in the /Applications folder. Typically, this data is found in ~/Library/Application Support/name of app.

Eye-fi seems to have more consumer applications to me. My mom may shoot a few dozen pictures over the course of a few days, so Eye-fi makes sense. When I start shooting, on the other hand, the shot count tends to go into the hundreds. Then there's the issue of shooting RAW. Or video. For any of those situations, better to get a big SD card sans wi-fi.

The only reason I could see for COMPLETELY draining a laptop battery is if you're going to calibrate it. In that case, I'd recommend transcoding video. It kills your battery in no time. Just download some YouTube videos and throw them into Handbrake.

Based on your method above, you shouldn't even need an AirPrint-capable printer. Any All-in-One that allows you to scan an image to an SD card would work.
