We bought one at target for $35. I plan on changing out the shade, but the lamp is cute. Owl Lamps to Hoot About |

I like the option to keep my shoes on, especially if I am going to be standing or walking around, like I tend to do at parties. I also keep my shoes on most of the time at home, not because I necessarily love my shoes that much or get cold feet, but because my doctor insists. I have wonky hips-- one leg is a bit longer than then the other, and strangely enough this contributes to hip pain and can cause a problem with standing and walking. So a heel insert in one of my shoes really helps. I'm a healthy young women and I'm not about to complain about my hips if asked to take my shoes off, but I think for some of us there is a practical reason for wanting to keep our shoes one, like avoiding pain and physical therapy. Lately I have been looking for decorating inspiration as I fill the dumpster in the drive with old furniture, carpet, and celing texture. I just kept seeing blah and more blah. Then I saw this. Getting this sort of design/effect in my home would be the sort of thing I'd consider hiring a designer for (green everywhere with jewels on the wallpaper, means these designers clearly "get it"). Of course, I would likely have to hire designers I could never afford. Instead, I will just stare at this and covet all the amazing fabrics. I sometimes wonder if the husband and I should in separate beds. He is a light sleeper and I have sleep issues-- I don't snore but I do kick and talk and so forth. One problem-- figuring out how to arrange the space. Besides, we have such a nice four poster... Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | When Couples Don't Sleep Well Together... |

How are these for reading? I want to put a rocker or two in the bedroom, but the space is pretty tight. I'm looking for something affordable that could easily be scooted forward or back to accommodate foot traffic, and of course something really comfortable for reading and relaxing with wine or cocoa. I think two different styles can be mixed but you do have to decide what the dominate themes and tones are and what brings in a note of difference. I don't like modern style, for example-- I tend to find it cold and bland and just unappealing. I'm more eclectic and I like antiques and vintage and british colonial and pop surrealistic art and skulls (not necessarily all together). But my husband likes modern. So we tend to have one or two pieces each of us rather likes -- one more contemporary for him, maybe an antique or british colonial style for me and then go with something like shaker lines that we both like for the rest of the space and compromise on various accessories until things get settled. It takes a while, and we have to live in the rooms and renegotiate on things. After all, a functional space with different styles doesn't happen in one afternoon. I would also love to see more about British Colonial decor. It is my favorite style, but I have a difficult time finding anything on it past the basic this is British Colonial stuff and it would be nice to learn more about especially to avoid disasters when trying to mix styles or get an unique feel. I would do a deeper shade of turquoise with some quarter round white or cream trim, a very ornate mirror that steals the show, and some simple prints and towels to balance it out. Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Good Questions: Ideas for the Penny Tiled Powder Room? |

I understand the concept of de-cluttering perfectly well. I have more than my share of clutter. I suspect a large amount of that clutter comes from things I would gladly get rid of were it wise, like various papers. Oh deliver me from paper clutter (ideally without the need to file). And then there are the things that I plan on getting rid of but cannot yet afford to. Sometimes a cheap hack in terms of storage or whatnot takes more stuff than a more expensive, more efficient solution. There have been periods in my life when I have done without many items-- travel, study abroad, et cetera. Yet I find that I like things, and I want even more things! I think there is a difference between being a mindless consumer and being a mindful one. I have far more than I truly need, but I have things that I like, things that improve the quality of my life and bring me bits of joy here and there. I just *love* these pictures. The one with the built in book cases, above the door, is my favorite. It isn't unusual for me to look around our house and think about putting built ins all over above a certain level, including above all the doorways. I think we might have to do just that now that I've seen it. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Jamie's Bookcase of the Day |
