Ugly dolls and toys are cute, but I assume adults live here?

The kitchen layout seems odd and not very functional. But maybe she doesn't cook much.

Frankly, it is refreshing to see such an "adult" space on this blog. The insulting and immature comments by some member of this community are appalling.

I think this house is delightful for many reasons--the mix of old and new, the color palette, the interesting details. Would love to see the exterior.

My cabinets had awful-looking laminate "boxes" and wood doors (honey-stained oak) that were supposed to match. My husband and I debated about tearing them out but decided against it. They may have been ugly but they were completely functional, and it seemed terribly wasteful to tear them out. So we opted to paint. We used a special primer (I'm sorry I don't recall the name)--and sanding was key, especially on the laminate surfaces. We painted the doors (front and back), the boxes, and the interior edges of the openings and left the interior surfaces alone. Turned out great.

My husband just gave me an awesome Smith-Corona from the 1950s for my birthday. It is gray with ivory keys and still has its original case. A thing of beauty. No, I wouldn't attempt to write a novel on it, but it is great for typing little notes!

I agree with JamesinSF about the style being cliche (at least here in the Bay Area). The look is getting dated already.

I have soapstone counters, too. I absolutely love the way they look and feel, but be warned--the edges chip quite easily if you knock something heavy (like a pot) against them. The edges around my sink and above my dishwasher are all nicked up. This is fine if you don't mind the "patina" of age (in my case, achieved in a matter of months!), but not good if you want your counters to look perfect forever.

Caesarstone and Silestone, both quartz composite, are much nicer than Corian for about the same cost. Very durable and easy to maintain, too.

I love my soapstone counters for all the reasons mentioned in the post. They are really beautiful and easy to maintain. And yes, the scratches and patina are part of the character. I will say that my counter has chipped a little along the edge of the counter around the the sink and dishwasher from the occasional whack of heavy pot.

I too have soapstone and love the look. But a word of caution: it can chip along the edge if you bang something heavy against it (like a cast-iron pan).

I have two Angela Adams rugs, and I absolutely love them. The textures, colors, and patterns are wonderful and imaginative. Plus, they are made by Rugmark, a nonprofit organization in India that supports building schools and ending child labor.
