This is one of my favorite winter recipes. It cooks up in slow cooker and freezes really well.

i use those cubes too... but mine are leftover baby food cubes, which you can get on amazon, in two different sizes, a bit cheaper.

i hang dry oregano and thyme and any basil that doesn't get made into pesto goes into the freezer whole. it actually holds up pretty well.

i make bread crumbs out of crusts only! my toddler won't eat the crusts, so i cut them off his bread, freeze them and make bread crumbs when the bag gets full.

i agree with @ jmorri26 about the bay leaves, my Sicilian grandfather used them in almost everything and my mother and I use them a lot too.

I would add pine nuts, dried porcini and corn meal/polenta to the list.

i love taquitos. i make black bean all the time, but instead of frying, i bake them. it's really easy, less messy and healthier. before filling the corn tortillas i spray them with vegetable oil, place them in a non-stick skillet on both sides for a bit to soften them, then add filling and roll. I place them snugly in a baking dish seam side down, and bake 15-20 min until the tortilla is nice and crunchy.

I love Italian potato salad! i grew up eating it and it is one of my go-to summer party foods. Though I've always had it meatless. It's also great with some pesto mixed in (arugula and parsley are my faves to add)

The best n/a beer i had while pregnant was at Hopleaf in Chicago, but i don't remember the name of it - i think it was German - it was really good.

Of the beer i could get in any liquor or grocery store Caliber was the best.

@ city girl - i have had great success making this delicious salad with beets replacing the bresaola and i used chopped spinach instead of the mâche. just roast the beets the night before you plan to make.

i love lemon zest - i use it in many, many things. one of my favorite, easy weeknight dinners is lemony pasta. 2 cloves of garlic smashed and heated in a generous knob of butter or olive oil, with the zest of a lemon, a glug of white wine and a pinch of red pepper flakes over pasta (usually spaghetti) topped with chopped parsley or cilantro and a shower of parmesan. so good.

this salad was really good. i subbed out beets for the bresaola, and chopped baby spinach for the mâche. also spooned the extra lemon/olive oil over the top and garnished with fennel fronds. yummy.
