After all of these GREAT suggestions, I'm feeling the itch to try this.

Pleas post pics of the finished product, would love to hear if it is a success.

I like the idea of this, the scale, artwork like feel, but it just screams "dusty mess in a month" to me.

I second the white, or off white. Especially if you want to direct the focus to the floor. Same with the decor, very paired down neutrals with a few blue-green-yellow artwork/elements that pop. The wall color now in my opinion is awful.

I'm not in NY but I have ordered some great fabric from Purl in Soho on their website, http://www.purlsoho.com/purl , and would assume the store has a good selection too. And I second reprodepot, great fabrics there too.

I would say floating shelf to function as your landing strip, and a plant below, an organic shape to balance out the media center.

I put one up over our back door last summmer because I have small children running in and out all day and didn't want to use anything toxic to keep flies etc. away. It worked well for us, didn't keep every fly out but it made a huge difference.
