i used a big piece of styrofoam from packing mirrors, but a piece of rectangle ceiling tile would work well too. i had the kids go outside and paint it up. very abstract, big, colorful, beautiful, light, and inexpensive.

cswitz-there are many different reasons i'm sure, but for us we never used our crib and our 18 mo is ready for her own bed and a twin is too large for her to get in and out of on her own unless we put the mattress straight away on the floor, and in that case i'm sure our 2 labs would think they'd died and gone too heaven :). if we were to get something like this she could use it until she was 4 possibly and then one of her older brothers might be too tall for their twin and ready to pass it on. so that's one reason.

How Can I Shred Fabric and Turn It Into Fiberfill? Good Question | Apartment Therapy Re-Nest

i will have to look into a stip cutter, i don't even know what that is. i've tried the paper shredder, mine did not work. but that's what i want it to do, like pulverize it:). it just seems like this would be a good solution for recycling fabric. use it for stuffing and packing things. i just can't stand throwing it away and i don't know what else to do with it. thanks for the suggestions!
