Gotta share a trick my step-dad figured out -- try toasting the zucchini bread, then putting peanut butter on it. They *really* like each other -- talk about sum of the whole!

I nabbed my Dad's when we lost him -- perfect for Cranberry Orange Relish. Sooo much better than the food processor with its widely varying "grain". Like coffee ground in a burr grinder vs one of the whirly cups.

I'm fairly new to the AT blog, so this may have been mentioned before, but just in case not... If you're into these books, be sure to check out the Textile Museum in DC.

Another thought -- if one or both outside sides will be visible, maybe add some way of "featuring" one of the pieces, be it on hooks or on a picture ledge, etc. To me, the jewelry kind of IS the decoration, so might as well use it as such.

And I think "boring old cream" is actually a great way to let any featured piece or pretty knobs, as well as the interior color, really pop!

Certainly the opposite of my taste, but that said, that kitchen is the most dramatic example of "the power of paint" that *I've* ever seen.

when I was over 300 lbs, I needed and got an extra-, extra-firm mattress. Now I've lost quite a lot of weight, and am going to need to add a topper to get less resistance.

regarding the whole legs thing, I think if I did it, I'd have to do a visual pun, and have the credenza not quite touch those legs.

If you're craving a bit more color, and if the colors portrayed by my monitor are accurate, it looks to me like you could do one wall in a tangerine or thereabouts, and have some fun. Me, I'm a cool color person generally, but maybe you'd like the variety?

I saw one in Fine Homebuilding in an Old Mexico Courtyard house, that was very cool: instead of a bench seat along the window, it was more like a booth with no table - two short cushioned benchs facing each other, built into a window nook. LOVED it! Still have the magazine, too.

If you want casters, fine, but if the legs work for you aesthetically, I'd go with four cool 5" or 6" legs on TOP and either a piece of glass or wood, or whatever trips your trigger. Quite a number of people have hacks using this over at http://www.ikeahackers.net/

a book called Animal House Style (serious info, fun book) cited ultrasuede as the ideal pet house fabric. It's fur-resistant, odor-resistant, and supposedly not so appealing to scratching cats (beg to differ there). One she didn't mention that I've discovered since getting them is that it also cleans up pretty well with baby wipes, and I use my hard floor vacuum head to wipe fur off of them -- works great. (Latex gloves work amazingly well too, btw.)

In addition to the whole filing gig, add "Document the serial number of any purchase you would want back after a robbery, fire, etc." No serial number? Photo & appraised value, at a guess...

One bummer about all this: depending on how one learns (aka learning disability), some of us need a darned sight more than a rule to "get it" -- some of us need to do a thing, numerous times even, to grasp the benefit at a brain level that results in habits. So maybe add to the list for parents and future parents, "Chores serve a greater function than the work the child 'accomplishes'. They learn the skill AND the habit."

I've come to love Atomic Ranch style. I'd point anyone with a love or interest in the style towards http://www.atomic-ranch.com/ , their wonderful magazine and the corresponding active group on Facebook.

My 1955 house is more ranch than atomic, but the little touches sneak in: clean lines around the aluminum frame windows (oh, boy, now those are a pain), built-in hutches in TWO rooms, combined living/dining room, and a HALL (albeit tiny) into which the living room, two bedrooms and bath (and hot water/heater closet) open, the proverbial panelled den <sigh, not my fave>. I have more rooms with 5 doors/doorways than seems statistically possible.

I could never justify the cost in this house but I dream of custom kitchen cabinets based on Heywood-Wakefield bookcases. Wheat. <sigh again>

I've got two issues with CFLs (thus far, LEDs are rich for my blood):
1. I tried CFLs in the kitchen ceiling fixture of my 1955 atomic ranch. Their weight pulled on the fixture till it damaged the wiring. This has happened in more than one fixture.
2. The CFLs have not lasted anything *close* to their supposed lifespans.
Oh, and 3. Just replaced the one in the pitch dark garage -- definitely starts dim then gets brighter over several minutes. Creepy and inconvenient. And, btw, when I tried to take it down using the lightbulb attachment for the extended reach tool, it didn't go on the bulb easily. When I tried to twist it on, it broke the CFL - my bad -- don't do that!!
