Great idea, very clever. I also like that window panel with all the cheese names... Too bad they misspelled "Stilton" and "Taleggio"... :D Look! A Chandelier Made Out of Cheese Graters |

Another vegetarian here. One Thanksgiving, I wanted to make vegetarian stuffing. I didn't want to buy poultry seasoning because I didn't like the idea of having it sitting there so sad in the cupboard waiting until the next Thanksgiving, so I made my own mix. The next Thanksgiving, I bought Bell's thinking "maybe this stuff is better than my mix". But then again, what to do with it besides stuffing? So one fine day, while improvising a soup, the "Aha!" moment came and now poultry seasoning is a very happy camper in my cupboard. Quick Tip: Boost Vegetable Soup With Poultry Seasoning |

I think you're right, RosieGreenie. I guess it works just like the apple in the paper bag trick mentioned in the post. The apple releases ethylene, ripening the persimmon. Ingredient Spotlight: Persimmons |

My mom (she's japanese) rubs the Hachiyas with ethanol (I guess you could use vodka) and they're ready to eat the next day. I am not sure if the alcohol gets rid of the astringency or accelerates the ripening process, but it does work! Ingredient Spotlight: Persimmons |

I made something similar to ladykatey's stewed apples. The only difference was that I added cream sherry. It was very good but a little too sweet, so next time I'll skip the sugar. I served them on Irish oatmeal for dessert. How To Make a Small, Quick Batch of Applesauce |

I think it depends on the filling. Sometimes, a nice single or double crust complements -and compliments- a bold filling (I'm thinking of my favorite, strawberry rhubarb). Other times, a simple streusel topping is enough, especially if you don't want the extra calories. I don't think delicate fillings (texture or flavor-wise) require a crust. Mark Bittman Disses Pie |

I agree with katepk and everyone else about how wasteful those machines are. The coffee tastes horrible and the machine takes too much space. I think they are waaay overrated. K-Cups and Coffee Pod Systems: Love Them or No, Thanks? |

I gotta try those... My favorite flatbread brand right now is Flatout. They are pretty big and oblong, so they make great wraps. They come in different flavors and they are low calorie too! I wish they were cheaper though... Kitchen Staple: Trader Joe's Middle Eastern Flatbread |

I didn't want to join the crowds at the stores so we didn't stock up. We only bought cheese. Since we have eletric range, I proceeded to cook some of the things we had in the fridge (like eggs and overdue veggies) plus a couple of loaves of bread. So everything was pretty healthy. There was only one problem: I didn't make anything sweet. But we didn't lose power, so it wasn't a big deal. Next time (if we face another situation like this one) I'll bake brownies or cookies to satisfy the brain. Hurricane Irene and What We Ate: Observations from NYC |
