Actually, I think this is great advice.

Any fool can learn to control exposure or what the difference is between a wide angle and telephoto lens is. Less obvious is how do do something with it-- and that requires being bold and persistent. Which is what Bruce's tips here are about.

Some very good tips and ideas in the comments. My wife and I love being hosts to visitors, and happily, I see we offer our guests virtually everything that people asked for above.

Though I find hosts offering to let us "sleep in the master bedroom" downright creepy, even though I understand it's intended to be generous. Basically, I was brought up with the idea that the master bedroom is one of the most private places in the house. So the idea that someone would willingly clear out and let me sleep there, or that I'd want to, strikes me as weird.

We love playing host, but I'll be sleeping in my own bed while folks visit, thanks. And as a guest, if the choice is the MBR or sleeping on the fold-out sleeper sofa, I'll take the sleeper sofa, no complaints. (If you're the kind of host that offers your MBR to visitors, better to offer it in advance and allow them to decline...)

@gerundgirl I was thinking the same thing. Looks like water damage to me, yikes!

Fantastic. Beautiful work!

I too like the idea of putting an Android touch screen of some sort where the chalk board is, though the resulting cabinet wouldn't be much of a mini-bar at that point.

It's all about crowd control. If an accident were to happen during takeoff or landing, they don't want people not hearing instructions due to earbuds in the ears. They don't want people failing to evacuate because the smart phone they were holding was jolted out of their hands upon some impact and they're searching for it rather than getting off the plane. And so on.

Crowd control. And when viewed that way, not only does it make sense, I can live with it.

Radiant heat is great. When we renovated our kitchen, we looked into radiant there, as it's above our uninsulated garage space. And then we found out how much it costs to install, in an existing structure.

Oh, well! Sure would have been nice.

I thought I recognized the couple in the photo here! Way to get an AT feature!

They've done some absolutely amazing work in this place, and run a very friendly blog too.

1) The website *is* called "Apartment Therapy"
2) An awful lot of people *do* own a car
3) This describes a great deal of the US, and much of Europe.

I don't know how much to worry about this, ultimately. What, did you think the cargo area of the UPS truck your laptop was delivered by was climate controlled? :-)

Seems like the narrow sound stage could be solved if they had put the speakers farther apart, rather than directly adjacent. I mean, those tweeters are right next to each other. Why didn't they put them at the far corners? Very puzzling. I don't get it.

All-in-all, it strikes me as a giant Kloss Model One radio. With all the good and trade-offs that represents.

Interesting break-down of all those items, thanks for posting this.

It's as I suspected: the standby power usage is annoying, but ultimately not a ton of money in terms of my household's greater scheme. (This annual total is only enough to pay for two days of daycare... and we have a very reasonably priced daycare at that!) No DVR in our house apparently helps us a lot here.

An "A" for effort! Wow, it looks great! Love the use of materials.

The only part that confuses me is that you're trying to achieve lo-fi results using a very nice, sharp lens. Maybe you could get more of the look you're going for if you used the lens from a disposable film camera, instead.

After all, that "unpredictable nostalgic look of film" is less from the film itself, and more from the crappy point'n'shoot cameras most people used back in the day. So, use a crappy lens!

I have to admit, it looks good. MSFT might be onto something with the way the home screen works, for mobile devices.

This is pretty much a make-or-break product for Nokia. Will be interesting to see what happens.

@allisen Right! I can't believe nobody else commented on that yet.

My neighbors just bought the Toro model. I was skeptical, but it works really well. The leaf vacuum/mulching function is best left to relatively small areas, more because it's a bit slow to pick up all the leaves in a pile, than anything else. Remarkably light-weight, too.

For the price, it's worth it.

I was unaware that f/2.8 was considered "exceptionally fast" for a wide prime lens... I guess Canon and Nikon's 24mm f/1.4 lenses must be considered "astoundingly impossibly fast"? </sarcasm > (Those cover full-frame, too, not APC-C.)

Omission of the Fuji X100 is pretty odd here, too.

Olympus Micro 4/3 system is pretty nice. A friend bought it and it's a nice balance of size vs. utility.

The G4 Cube Tissue Dispenser is utter genius! (The hardware is finally old enough that I can't imagine getting much use out of one, to feel bad about it.)

My dad made one of those iMac lamps just the other week. The real challenge will be, where will my mom let him put it? :-)

I agree with the back-to-basics approach, as far as stimulating creativity. Though for me, it'd be more along the lines of what @chrishelms suggests suggests, than getting a point'n'shoot.

My favorite thing right now is using my Pentax MX film SLR with a 24mm and 85mm lens: One lens in my pocket and one on the camera. Film forces me to slow down a bit; and two lenses enforces a specific way of "seeing".

DSLRs with "super zoom" lenses (eg 18mm-200mm) are for the lazy!

I really do like the look, but I fear it would get very greasy very quickly. A nice fabric shade would get particularly gross pretty readily.

This is probably best for a counter top that's nowhere near the stove or food prep.
