Monoprice offers a similar bluetooth audio receiver for just $20:

Actually, I think the Monoprice version looks better than the Harman/Kardon one.

I used that very same "Tiara" suitcase for many years. Very sturdy, and easy to pick out of the airport carousel once everyone else stopped using that kind of suitcase.

I don't know which is weirder: that people need a tutorial on how to drill holes in an old suitcase and hook up a few wires; or that anyone would feel territorial about posting instructions on how to accomplish that.

This just isn't what we'd call a "trade secret", any more than turning a Mason Jar into a lamp by putting a hole in the top and adding a light bulb socket to turn it into a lamp would be. Sorry.

I believe this is the poster child for people who cry foul when someone paints a good piece of wooden furniture. Why would you cover up that gorgeous wood with paint? Especially the sloppy ugly brown paint that some weirdo used?

Excellent work. Great eye for even figuring this could be rescued. I'd have kept walking...

I like the new drawer pulls, they suit it well, I think.

This is great, thanks for sharing!

Wish I had similar photos of my 1929 house. From neighborhood lore, we are only the 4th owners, after the 3rd owners lived there for roughly 50 years.

It was interesting dismantling our kitchen (all the way to bare studs) and seeing the layers of previous styles as I removed stuff. (The kitchen was a greasy 1980s horror, so no loss...)

Agreed 100% with Battra92. Also consider that a powerful corded drill costs MUCH less than a powerful cordless drill.

Think about it: how often are you going to drill or use a power screwdriver that is nowhere near an available outlet? Honestly, not often.

However, the likelihood that a cordless drill's battery will be dead on you when you need it most right now? Pretty much a certainty. (See: Murphy's Law.)

Those are some beautiful cameras! I've been thinking of making one myself, though without a decent focusing mechanism it doesn't feel worth it: doubt I'd end up using it much as a result.

PS, a Super Angulon 65mm f/8 lens retails for about $150 used from KEH dot com. I'm not sure any large format lens is exactly "low end", even the 90 year old Zeiss 150mm lens I picked up for $50 once...

Yes, the dense urban area thing. Sure, my wifi is protected, but I can see something like a dozen other WAPs listed. If I put up this wallpaper, it would probably block them out, or at least attenuate the signals a good deal. (It would also help my neighbors, by keeping my wifi signals from interfering with theirs.)

This is an issue in my rowhouse, where I only have neighbors on the sides. The problem is even worse in apartment buildings where you could have neighbors upstairs and downstairs, too.

Actually, I think this is great advice.

Any fool can learn to control exposure or what the difference is between a wide angle and telephoto lens is. Less obvious is how do do something with it-- and that requires being bold and persistent. Which is what Bruce's tips here are about.

Some very good tips and ideas in the comments. My wife and I love being hosts to visitors, and happily, I see we offer our guests virtually everything that people asked for above.

Though I find hosts offering to let us "sleep in the master bedroom" downright creepy, even though I understand it's intended to be generous. Basically, I was brought up with the idea that the master bedroom is one of the most private places in the house. So the idea that someone would willingly clear out and let me sleep there, or that I'd want to, strikes me as weird.

We love playing host, but I'll be sleeping in my own bed while folks visit, thanks. And as a guest, if the choice is the MBR or sleeping on the fold-out sleeper sofa, I'll take the sleeper sofa, no complaints. (If you're the kind of host that offers your MBR to visitors, better to offer it in advance and allow them to decline...)

Fantastic. Beautiful work!

I too like the idea of putting an Android touch screen of some sort where the chalk board is, though the resulting cabinet wouldn't be much of a mini-bar at that point.

It's all about crowd control. If an accident were to happen during takeoff or landing, they don't want people not hearing instructions due to earbuds in the ears. They don't want people failing to evacuate because the smart phone they were holding was jolted out of their hands upon some impact and they're searching for it rather than getting off the plane. And so on.

Crowd control. And when viewed that way, not only does it make sense, I can live with it.

Radiant heat is great. When we renovated our kitchen, we looked into radiant there, as it's above our uninsulated garage space. And then we found out how much it costs to install, in an existing structure.

Oh, well! Sure would have been nice.

1) The website *is* called "Apartment Therapy"
2) An awful lot of people *do* own a car
3) This describes a great deal of the US, and much of Europe.

I don't know how much to worry about this, ultimately. What, did you think the cargo area of the UPS truck your laptop was delivered by was climate controlled? :-)

Seems like the narrow sound stage could be solved if they had put the speakers farther apart, rather than directly adjacent. I mean, those tweeters are right next to each other. Why didn't they put them at the far corners? Very puzzling. I don't get it.

All-in-all, it strikes me as a giant Kloss Model One radio. With all the good and trade-offs that represents.

Interesting break-down of all those items, thanks for posting this.

It's as I suspected: the standby power usage is annoying, but ultimately not a ton of money in terms of my household's greater scheme. (This annual total is only enough to pay for two days of daycare... and we have a very reasonably priced daycare at that!) No DVR in our house apparently helps us a lot here.

An "A" for effort! Wow, it looks great! Love the use of materials.

The only part that confuses me is that you're trying to achieve lo-fi results using a very nice, sharp lens. Maybe you could get more of the look you're going for if you used the lens from a disposable film camera, instead.

After all, that "unpredictable nostalgic look of film" is less from the film itself, and more from the crappy point'n'shoot cameras most people used back in the day. So, use a crappy lens!

I have to admit, it looks good. MSFT might be onto something with the way the home screen works, for mobile devices.

This is pretty much a make-or-break product for Nokia. Will be interesting to see what happens.
