pinkalbatross, I love your solutions, mostly because they are what I've been wanting to do myself for years! My house is small with a sea of doors and windows everywhere that seem to dictate furniture layout, but I would love to have the little dining room off the kitchen be primarily a sitting room just for me with a TV. I don't like being in the front of the house to lounge and watch a show with my foot hanging over the arm of a chair! The same with a smaller parlor for guests (of which there are painfully few) and an office/dining layout that could be much larger than what's in my bedroom.

I tend to decorate with a view to sell, yet I've lived here for over 20 years! What's the point of doing all this for other people who aren't here? Thanks for the remark and the resulting encouragement.

Another thing just in regards to the title of the article: It would be interesting to find out how people learn things about their decorating style thru the decor process. For example, I've discovered that I very much prefer monochromatic or analogous colour schemes only because I've noticed I'm physically more relaxed and can't seem to stop doing them. My Pinterest boards have a lot of love for other styles, and I look and see the beauty of them, but when I keep painting and accessorizing - it comes out all shades of blue or all layers of gold. Who knew? I didn't know myself!

If the light over the stove is on, then I consider that something is cooking somewhere in the kitchen and don't go off and leave it. When I'm done with whatever, I turn off that light. If I need ambient light, there is a small (and very pretty) lamp on a countertop that can be left on.

Black toilets may be stylish, but they are horrible to use. It is impossible to tell if they are clean. Disgusting beyond comprehension.
