I appreciate the comments and I agree definitely on the dairy. But I've read on more than one occasion about botulism concerns with garlic in oil. I think the vinegar *might* help, but either way, I don't keep any prepared food as long as a week. You might think I'm crazy, but a Serve-Safe class in culinary school made me realize that no food is worth the risk!

I have a question about the comment that most dressings will last 'a few weeks'. Most of the salad dressing recipes that I have say they are safe to use for a week, tops. Any ideas why? My only guess is the garlic...

The only potlucks we host are our large (13- 16 people) family holiday dinners. My sisters are all great cooks so typically the host provides the main dish + drinks and the rest of us (plus our divorced parents, but that's another topic!) bring the rest. It works out well, thankfully.

But for regular dinner parties with friends, I prefer to do it all. I'm currently not working, (I'm an unemployed pastry chef) so I love the chance to pamper my guests.

Gougeres = goo-jers

Phonetics aside, I love gougeres! I made them once for a holiday home tour my Mom was hosting and one of the so-called 'guests' had the nerve to tell my Mom that she forgot to fill them! Classy.

Music is definitely an essential part of all my parties - dinner or otherwise. We've had a Valentine's Day dinner party for the past 5+ years and that playlist is pretty set. I just add new music as I find it. We also have a set 'party music' playlist, that I also update as needed or as the mood strikes. But for regular dinner parties, we tend to play a mix of jazz cds (mostly mid-tempo) throughout the entire evening. I don't want anything that might compete with good conversation!

I tried adding flaxseed to my granola to give it a nutritional boost - and actually liked the nutty flavor. But my food scientist sister pooh-poohed the nutritional benefits. According to her studies, our bodies better process the omega-3s from actual foods, like salmon.

But if you want to use them, remember to store them in the refrigerator or freezer! Flaxseed goes rancid very quickly so only grind what you will use within a short period of time.

I make my granola using that same recipe (soo good!) and my trick is stir it like normal during the bulk of the baking time, but hold off as it approaches the level of darkness/done-ness (?) you like. Then, when you pull it out of the oven, let it cool in the same baking sheet. Remember to line the baking sheet beforehand with parchment or a silpat, however, or it will stick to the pan - not good!

My Mom doesn't cook much anymore, but my sisters and I insist that she brings her infamous sweet potatoes (with the marshmallows on top!) every Thanksgiving. Thankfully they don't require cream of anything.

My MIL, on the other hand, still cooks most meals like it's 1973 and altho she doesn't do the creamy canned soups, her pork chop suey is showing its age. :( Overcooked vegs, a gloopy sauce and just bland everything. Thankfully she seems to like most of what I cook, tho my FIL can't seem to understand what that 'crazy' naan is doing on his table some nights!

Yay! Love ATK - the show, the magazines, the books and the website. I actually interviewed with them years ago (2005?) and they were a really great group. I cooked in the small kitchen as a part of the interview and it was an incredible experience.

I, too, thought it was my dream job until I realized that while I love the detail they provide, I am nowhere as particular as they are. Case in point - I had to bake their notoriously fussy 'Soft and Chewy Sugar Cookies'. When it was time to test the finished product, I was asked how I knew the butter was soft 'enough' and I replied that I just knew - heck, I'd been baking cookies for over 20 years at that point! The correct response was to check the temp of the butter, using a thermometer. Um, yeah, so not me, afterall...

There were other issues (moving from Michigan to Boston, would my husband find a job? etc), of course, but regardless, I'm still glad I had the experience!

I asked Dorie Greenspan a question thru twitter and she was really helpful. But I also asked Nick Malgieri a question on twitter and I'm still waiting for a reply. I just tried to follow up on his site - fingers crossed I'll get a response one of these days!
