We were "cased" on the subway in Rome by a father and his 7 YEAR-OLD son. We caught on to their suspect head nods and managed to leave with our valuables. I got caught off guard while taking a photo at the coliseum when a man dressed as a tourist holding a video camera (but not looking through it) sidled up to me and tried to snatch my bag. Luckily my friend intervened before I was robbed. Both times we stood out from the crowd because we had our backpacks on. Rome is great but it's a pickpocket haven.

The rest of our trip (when we didn't have to carry around our backpacks) we blended in and never had a problem. If you look and act like a tourist in a touristy area it's akin to wearing a blinking sign that says "rob me."

The cost of dialing Information from my cell phone during the times I can't look up the number on the internet is worth not having the clutter of a phone book. My phone book goes straight from the doorstep to the recycle bin and I save about a cubic foot of space in my house.

I've been in Australia for 4 years now and was totally unaware of gumtree. You've opened up a whole new world. Thanks for posting this!

This might just be my favourite house tour ever! So full of cute! I love how much colour you've incorporated. I particularly like the framed A frame ladder plate with the A underneath. Very creative. Thanks for sharing!

To Apartment Therapy: Can we get floor plans on the house tours? It would help to give a better sense of the space.

Our friend grilled halloumi at a BBQ a few years back and we have been hooked ever since. Last night we grilled halloumi and choritzo on skewers, topped with a mint sauce and finished with a squirt of lemon. Delicious!

We either grill halloumi on a grill pan or on a hotplate on the BBQ. It's great on its own!

brenjay, we had a kitchen spider named Herman a few years back. Herman must be a common spider name. His brother Nacho hung out (literally) in the living room.

I can stomach cohabitating with daddy longlegs, but I draw the line at huntsmen as big as my hands. I know they're harmless, but the thought of a big hairy spider crawling across my face in my sleep freaks me out.

Also, if you look at the International Small Cool entry from Sydney you'll notice that they have a dual flush toilet (picture 8). Dual flush toilets are the norm in Australia.

Funny that it's called the "Sydney." I live in Sydney and these are the exact same toilets we have in our bathrooms at work.

Extra cupcakes for the mental image of you chasing after your dog with fabric and a glue stick. A corgi covered in tufted fabric would make a good footstool.

I'd like to imagine that the antlers are from jackalopes or squirrels with antlers that she brought back from a high-heeled hunting expedition.

I am in love with that sofa. Better yet is the colour combination of the purple with the turquoise chalkboard to the right. Awesome.

The Honda Fit (Jazz here in Australia) is the greatest little car EVER! Like Hollie I couldn't be happier with it. Sure it's not the most powerful car around but talk about smallest/coolest.
Over the years we've fit an entire IKEA kitchen (including the 9 foot long benchtop) and all my eBay finds: a 6 foot long entertainment centre, a large dresser, large coffee tables, and 2 console tables without any troubles. I would never try to put anything on the roof without a roof rack though.
The only thing we moved that didn't totally fit inside the car was a 7 foot tall, 4 foot wide pantry. In that case we jammed it in the car, closed the hatch as much as we could and used bungee cords and rope to tie it down which we secured by looping them through windows, doors and hooks underneath the car. The bungee cords had too much bounce when going over bumps, so the rope kept it all stable.
In summary: Wagons/hatchbacks are super space efficient.

An Australian launched something called "Neighbour day." It simply encourages people to "Say G'day to your neighbours."

Our cohabitation was initiated by my then-boyfriend's landlord selling his apartment and kicking him out. I had just bought a place so he moved in with me. Unfortunately he had little time to go through and purge anything and ended up moving ALL his junk (crappy furniture, stacks of paperwork etc) into my already fully furnished home. Ack! In the two years since then, he's parted with anything unnecessary and the house is mostly organised. I've also parted with things I don't need. Now if only we could agree on how to decorate the place!
