As someone with a shellfish allergy I appreciated adding oysters, shrimp and crab to this list for the health reasons at least, even if they weren't listed in the article. It is extremely frustrating going to a wedding with shrimp and crab based appetizers and entrees. And many times the waiter staff is not involved in food prep and does not even know what is in an h'orderve let alone how to handle it safely so as not to harm someone. I now have my husband taste anything I am offered first after several waiters misidentified the food they serve.

Well I live a townhouse in the "levittownesque hellhole" that is Arlington south of Ballston and I love it. Beautiful historical landmark townhouse complex, walking distance to fun bars and restaurants and Arlington landmarks the Cinema Drafthouse and Bob & Ediths. I have class in Chinatown and can be at the Verizon Center in 10 minutes flat. My commute is actually shorter than many of my district dwelling friends who have to deal with 30-60 minute metro commutes depending on transfers and delays.

There are alot of nice neighborhoods both in DC and the suburbs that are close to everything DC has to offer. Alot of people have preferences based on tax payments (both INCOME and property based), work commutes, schools, the desire (or not) for private outdoor space or easy access to nightlife. I wouldn't go around name calling any neighborhood that is not the one you live in.

Regard bmorebent's question on how house tours are submitted, I know when I was a finalist for the dc blogger position the first time around, it was very much a question of who in my personal network will do this? Even worse it was who in my person network is available in the 7 days I have been given for this assignment and is willing to clean thier house in time.

I think I read in a couple of the house tours that the owners submitted the place up for coverage. Other than that its probably who is willing to put thier place up for review.

It seems a little catch 22 because some of the more "designed" spaces get criticised for being too big, expensive and not representative of AT's mission, but people who live in small spaces may not be in the position to throw out their perfectly acceptable furniture and buy new furniture that fits the scale of the room better, especially for a rental that is not intended to be permanent.

I'm torn on this one. One the one hand I do agree with some of the posters that the place is a little sparse. On the other hand its nice to see a small space done within a budget featured on AT again. Lately it seems the site has started to focus more and more on million dollar houses and huge luxury condos/apartments. This space seems more in keeping with the spirit of the site than many of the more "ready for primetime" features I've seen lately. YMMV.

I lived in a great group house in Arlington for a few years. It actually worked out really well, we had an upstairs and downstairs kitchen, 3 bathrooms for 5 rooms. All was well until a new guy moved into the room that shared a bathroom with me who didn't believe in closing the door when using the bathroom or showering.

I think group houses much past your mid-20s can be a bad idea, but if your whole house is older and past the frat house stage it can be alright.

I have a gateleg table similar to the IKEA NORDEN (only in real wood) and I love it. Mine has chairs that hide on the interior but I think its fairly easy to find versions with either chairs or drawers inside of them.

I love this. I think my number one design rule is if you are going to have a home office, place your desk in front of a window. It helps so much with inspiration to be able to see what is happening in the world around you. This is a really fun and interesting play on that.

Thanks for the comments! I did take all the photos and its nice to get some positive feedback on that aspect of the job. So much of the focus ends up being on the writing (as it should be) that photography side of things isn’t often discussed.

I understand that the critique that this post was fairly concise. My next post (a house tour) is significantly longer and post length is something I hope to play with if I am lucky enough to get to write for ATDC in the future.

mcq – The former owner of the store, Noi Chudnoff was a pretty amazing woman. The store originally started as a booth at eastern market then later moved to its present location. She was a big supporter of the local gay and lesbian community and worked with a variety of organizations and charities including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and Whitman-Walker Clinic, Ganymede Arts and the Source Theatre. She eventually had a day named after her. November 10th, 2006 was “Noi Chudnoff Day” in DC.

For an audition piece I didn’t want to focus too much on her to the detriment of the store and the designers they carry. In a perfect world I could have written several posts from my visit there. One on her and the store itself and a couple posts profiling specific artists/items available at the store. This was my attempt at integrating those ideas.

It seems like there are two claims that you are upset about here.

The first being the "one of a kind" claim. As previous posters have commented, the hand carving does technically make each panel "one of a kind." From the Viva Terra website: "Each piece is truly unique; variations in wood color and carving will occur." I could see that you understood that to mean that the design of panels themselves were unique, not just the minute variations in the hand carving. This is a misunderstanding and not something I would argue with the sellers. These types of panels are all one of a kind. That is the nature of hand carvings. The design itself really is readily available in stores across the country. Coincidentally, I just saw similar panels in a store in Baltimore called Eclectic Elements last week.

The more complicated issue is the question of whether or not the piece is “antique.” I would talk to the sellers and ask them where they procured the piece. See if they had any reason to make that particular claim. Just because the piece is similar to the Viva Terra panel, does not mean that it couldn’t also be an older, “antique” panel. If the sellers did get the piece from a distributor then they had no basis for the antique claim and you should be able to discuss returning the piece or dropping the price on that basis alone.

Sadly I don't own a bike, but I do have a wall and am dying to know where the Ferris Bueller poster came from? Do you have a source Sarah?

Thanks for the comments everyone!

I want to point out that all of the artists mentioned in the post do show at Eastern Market regularly. I was there on Saturday (after I wrote the post) and saw all of them.

noisyninja - Cherie Lester's work is beautiful in person. I really think that the photos here don't do it justice.

I'm sure that Baltimore would be covered on the DC blog. Thier are a ton of shops in Fell's Point alone would be good to cover.

I recently got a Haier portable washing machine and its great! I roll it out of the closet, hook up to the sink, do my laundry, then roll it back. I still have to hang dry but its way better than the laundry mat.

My father is a political pin collector and he stores his collection in an antique oak blueprint cabinet. The flat drawers are perfect for displaying the pins and they don't clutter up the walls of his office. This solution would probably be better for major collectors who have enough of the things to fill a whole cabinet though.

I agree with J as well. Its a shame because this really looks like a lovely home but I can't get a sense of it. I really wish the photographer had taken photos of the apartment itself to add to the vignettes and get a sense of the architecture.
