I take a handful of coins from my change jar at the end of the week and put it in a pouch to carry to the farmers' market. The sellers always appreciate being paid with correct change. I can't count the number of times I've received a delighted smile or a grateful "thank you."

(Admittedly, I live in Australia where the 1 and 2 dollar coins make it a bit more valuable to carry around lots of change).

Just to chime in....I am an American living in Australia. When I moved to AU and started looking for a place to live, one of the first things I noticed was that there seemed to be fewer clothes dryers and more clotheslines. From my experience in America (Florida, Tennessee, California, New York) I indeed took it for granted that most houses and apartment complex laundry rooms would come equipped with them. So, I totally get where RosieGreenie is coming from.

Anyway, I've easily adapted to line-drying and have never been the victim of a bird poop episode.

(I also tell people I'm from "The States" all the time. I see no problem with it).

Two, tall-ish, black bookcases to fill in the spaces on both sides of the chimney (preferably solid backed and not see-through), paint the walls a dark grey, and add the requisite baskets of wood and fireplace tools on either side of the stove. It's also a good idea to have an inexpensive throw rug in front of the fireplace so that wayward sparks don't burn holes in your carpet. Throw a plant in somewhere for good measure. :-)

The little, lonely stove makes me so sad. Maybe a shelf like this http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20105628 or this http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10120573 placed between the top of the stove and the "EAT" sign would help ameliorate the bareness of not having a backsplash or range hood.

This is my go to site: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

It's a great resource for whole foods, and quite a few convenience foods are listed too. Unless you're into the metric system, I find it helpful to uncheck the "100 grams" option on the "select amount" page.

I love the texture of Mary's Gone Crackers....and Triscuits. What's wrong with Triscuits?

I completely avoid recipes that require frying- I can't stand the resulting mess and stale smell around the range hood. I also resist recipes that tell me to cook a certain food, remove it from the pan, drain on paper towels, and then add it back in with other ingredients later. If I've already put it in the pan, I'd just like for it to stay there.

I think oofs just meant that shortening can be used as a general term for any fat used in making crusts and pastries. For example, butter might be referred to as "shortening" in a list of ingredients. However, butter does not contain trans fats like a hydrogenated vegetable oil shortening does.

Anyway, the lesson is READ CAREFULLY. This type of false advertising makes me angry. It is intentionally misleading and shows little regard for the consumer.

Instead of just throwing them away, you could use them to create another decorative display away from the kitchen. This is a photo of a decorative tray of spices that I saw in an Indian restaurant: http://www.flickr.com/photos/suavehouse113/2311943365/

I think something similar would look beautiful on a coffee table.

Respectfully, one 2oz boneless, skinless chicken thigh has approximately 5 grams of fat, of which only about 1.5 are saturated. With some veggies and whole grains, I'd say that could easily fit into anyone's moderate, healthy eating plan.

LOVE it. Admittedly, I definitely tasted soap the first time I tried it. However, I reached a point where I started to enjoy the extra complexity that it adds to the flavor profile of food. Now, I find that many dishes- particularly in Indian, Mexican, and Thai cuisine- seem to be lacking something without it.

My parents also taste the soap, so it could be a genetic trait. But, I don't think tasting soap equates to automatic dislike. Like some other posters I think it can become an acquired taste, especially with exposure to a wide variety of foods and flavors.

I'm a transplant from the U.S. living in Western Australia, and bringing your own canvas bags to the shops is a fairly normal occurrence (no weird looks from the cashiers).

So, I adjusted to the canvas totes, but was always wondering what I could do to replace those little produce bags (no pets, so I don't need them for waste). I found these little reusable net bags being sold at a local market

Even if you don't want to buy these, I wanted to put the idea out there. I really like them and it has made me virtually plastic bag free. Some of you craftier people could probably make mesh bags fairly easily at a low cost.
