Oh, and you can access your netflix streaming account via the HTPc, too...to it is really an all in one solution that won't affect content.

If you want to stream Hulu to your television, bypass all the Hulu sanctioned devices and find an off-brand HTPC (home theater computer--a very basic and compact desktop computer but with HDMI outputs for digital televisons.)

You can find refurbished HTPC's on ebay for around $200. That way, Hulu won't know it needs to restrict your content AND you'll have access to any future web-based TV services that may arise.

You can even get "remotes" for these things...

@ ArchDarling & Alyssasteffes...it's at the same level as the old console televisions that sat on the floor. Although they obviously fell out of favor, I'd say this isn't just pure novelty since they used to design televisions to be at this exact height.

Something like Sherwin Williams "Austere Gray"...it's a subtle, neutral gray-aqua shade. It looks great with other shades of green (especially chartreuse,) as well as yellow and red. I would paint the picture rail the same color as the wall...

Or don't change the paint...I agree that it looks nice as is!

The Color Cure

Would you like your cabinets better if they were darker? Liquid Sandpaper + darker gel stain is an easy and inexpensive way to change cabinets--as long as you go darker (OR redder--but I think a deep espresso would help modernize yours and would certainly look fantastic with brushed steel hardware)

You might also consider some simple larger-scale crown moulding for around the tops of the cabinets.

There are some good-looking vinyl flooring options...it's a little better than linoleum. It can mimic wood, stone, etc.

Good luck!

Good Questions

I like the painted bed better...it's not an iconic piece of furniture so why does it matter if its painted or not?

If I like the look of painted/colorful furniture, does that mean I should only buy particle board made stuff so that I don't "ruin" wood furniture? Why can't I be allowed to enjoy the structural strength of wood without the wood look?

Just use the right paint and the right application, and it will last a long time.

I prefer grayed-down colors for walls but I still think this color will look great as soon as you put up some art so its not front and center :)

Before & After: From Disaster to Delightful in 2 Days

Yea, OK...you may not be able to find a vintage used turntable there in S.F.--but WHEN possible, it's much more desireable than these hack-job Crosley things. (I bought one for my parents since they decorate with antiques and needed a radio--it fell apart in short order.)

Why purchase or hold on to vinyl if not for the purpose of sound quality? I'd say there is no point whatsoever.

I actually want to enjoy my records, not show off to my friends...

And I love birds... :)

Solid wood interior doors.

It's a part of the house that people will be touching and operating--and hearing. Hearing the solid contact of a heavy door when it closes makes me feel good and right :)

Really it should go unsaid, yet so often where I live builders think that slapping up those cheap hollow-core doors is an acceptable way to save money. Just spend the extra $75/door!!

Cherish Toronto

I believe every living room can use an antler of some sort (real, ceramic, or otherwise.)

But on the other hand, I grew up in rural Minnesota and have seen more than my fair share of game rooms adorned with bison, deer, and fish mounts...

It's a fine line really.

I have one of these waiting for me at my parents' house--along with a full record collection.

They finally upgraded to a shelf stereo system, and I can't wait to "downgrade" to the warm sound of music from my childhood.

But where the hell am I going to put it? :)

Well done! I love the look of MCM but can't really "live" with it myself. So I enjoy seeing the homes of people who can, especially when it's done well...
