Its not really an apology when you say oh I'm sorry but I still think your comment is "suspect", is it CookingSchoolConfidential.com?

I didn't wake up this morning thinking I'd jump in here to vouch for a friend to someone who seems determined to be suspicious and rude, but hey, every day has its surprises. Except it isn't really. Because I'm one of the people who warned her about joining this site because there always always is a subset of commenters who love saying some pretty obnoxious eyeroll-inducing things.

Maybe you feel she doesn't write like a journalist, random personal pot-shot there btw, since I know for a fact that she is one. And I know she had her own reservations about spending so much money on a litterbox but if she's happy with her purchase why shouldn't she write about it here, in a post that's about it?? Its not that bizarre to spend a lot of money on something and then want to spread the word that yes, at least in her case, it was worth the cost; If you can afford it then go for it.

Thanks for reminding me why I mostly lurk here as well. :P

RichardinLA - oh man that is a fantastic idea, totally something I'd love to do... maybe I could even do that someday, it'd free up so much more counterspace in my little kitchen.

I always wished the fridge and freezer spaces were swapped in my fridge, I freeze lots of leftovers and I love ice cream, but it's always stuffed full. I always have to make sure I have room for ice trays to lie flat. Annoying! It just takes too much planning for me to figure out what I can eat before it goes bad in the fridge, I'm just not that organized. My ideal situation would definitely be two counter height freezers and one fridge...

Since when do they make corian in that color?? *grabby hands"

I love these shades of green too much for my own good, I can never resist buying it, I have a neon green *couch*. A small table, towels.. teapot, 25% of my wardrobe... ahem. Sometimes I worry about how obnoxious it may be, but it makes me happy :p

Arg. I read more of the reviews and I can't reccommend the h2o mop in good faith anymore, just because it works for me it looks like the vast majority of people have had issues with it.

The bissel steam mop gets decent reviews on amazon, though. I figure if my mop conks out I may replace it with this one.

LiliZ, I found a video from a newsstation that tested the mop if you're curious.
http://video.aol.com/video-detail/does-it-really-do-that-h20-mop/1073820243
It gets pretty bad reviews here:
http://www.infomercialratings.com/product/h2o_steam_mop_reviews
But I dunno, I haven't had any problem with it. Its such a spendy item that I am pretty careful when I use it (purchased when I was at my old job that gave me quite a lot of disposable income :p) I still don't mop that often, lol

I get the big dirty bits off the floor with a sweeper, and then just push the h20 mop around as slowly as I can without getting impatient. The instructions reccomended keeping the mop on a spot for 8 seconds to sanitize it *snort* yeah ok if you have a very small floor I guess.

I really dislike cleaning the tub :( It's my own fault because I love salt scrubs and they make the tub disgustingly gungy. I try to use more environmentally friendly bathroom cleaners but then tend to give up and use comet because less scrubbing elbow grease is needed. Sigh.

My dream is to have one of those bathrooms that are all one molded piece, sink and toilet and shower integrated with a drain in the floor. When it got dirty I could attack it with a high pressure hose and some soap and just rinse off :D I saw a stainless steel one a few years ago in an Ikea in the UK and I never was able to find any info about them on the internet. I think they are made for boats?

I hate folding clothes too... so I don't. Hahaha, I hang up everything that can fit on a hanger (and many things that can't...), and the rest never seem to make it out of my clean laundry hamper *cough*

MFlick, I hate mopping as well (I once had a summer job as a janitor, too bad they dont make mini floor buffers) and bought a steam mop, holy cow it makes mopping SO EASY. Totally worth the money, best impulse infomercial purchase ever (yeah! no regrets really!). The one I got, H2o mop, has an attachment for cleaning carpets but I don't really understand what is useful about that. For steaming spills I guess. I basically never mopped before I got one of these, now I don't mind it at all.

Plumbing pipe would also be easier to make adjustable if you use a threaded rod at one end. Six inches would be plenty I think.

This would probably be a good starting point for it:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Zero-Point-Shelf/

If you cant put holes in your ceiling you'll probably want to put something like foam between the ceiling and the flange to pad it.

Yeah, you have to wait for the soil to dry out completely before you re-water them. Overwatering is what tends to kill succulents. I haven't been able to grow any plants that I like because my single apartment window is northfacing, but Im moving to a new place with southfacing windows soon I am *so* excited I can grow things now!

bromelia-
I think you have the misconception that because I don't own a tv, that I don't watch any :) I watch a surprising amount for someone who doesn't have one (well, it surprises other people), I'm a movie nut and I rent tv shows on dvd to watch on my laptop. I *love* it as if I was a screenwriter in a previous life, hehe

But! the significant thing about tv-on-computer that is you only watch which shows you want to when you want to, and not any random thing that happens to be on at the time (and no commercials!). Cos man that is just distracting.

I am in bed right now ;p with a hard cider lol

Yeeeeeah I don't really understand why people have such a problem with tvs. I don't own one but that's because all my favorite shows are on premium cable so I just rent them on dvd (netflix is cheaper...) and watch on my laptop. But the attitude that a tv in the house, and *gasp* possibly somewhere other than the living room, is somehow bad and wrong makes no sense mang. The "it distracts you from interacting with PEOPLE" reasoning clearly does not apply to us singles.

I do what chicity1126 does. If I'm doing something decorative and have to keep the tape up long after it dries, THEN I do the basecolor or clearcoat sealing thing.

Painter's tape is already pricey, I get annoyed just paying for the blue tape, why pay even more if you don't have to? Just paint more carefully ;)

While we're all measuring our pe- uh I mean apartment sizes, I'm living in less than 350sqft and a dining table was more important to me than a sofa (floor plan is also actually too small and awkward to fit a sofa in). It depends on your priorities, that's all.

I have an ikea fusion dining table because it is small AND super cute, it was more important to me to have a place where I could eat with guests than to have a sofa. On the other hand I don't own a tv so that affects furniture choices a bit. It took me a while to find a small scale armless loveseat so my guests wouldn't have to sit on the dining chairs (they aren't comfy at *all*).

Here is my couch :D

It's not that comfy either but I don't have guests that stay for long periods of time anyway.

Half of the time I eat in bed though... I should probably be more embarrassed than I am to admit that. :p

I'm nosy about the cost too. I'm moving in a month and have been planning to fix up the kitchen and there are great ideas here, I've already bought white paint for the cabinets and tile to replace the vinyl floor...

The black countertops are really impressive to me since it makes the appliances look SO much better and intentional. Black appliances/white countertops/wood cabinets is a little too much going on imo.

I wish I could afford new countertop but my splurge was a new ceramic cooktop instead. :)

I think a wood "frame" is a great idea as well. Flat long pieces of wood are cheap enough and you can stain them... If it were my window I'd do that AND put up giant vinyl decorating decals. :)

or the giant school map idea, that would be awesome if you can find one!

OMG amandacollier that online catalog is amazing. I am SO going to order a sheet of quilted chrome for my backsplash.... when I can afford it anyway.

I was looking at the ACP "metal" backplash panels for a while (you can get them at home depot and lowes, etc) but they dont have chrome... and when you have to get so many panels there are lots of seams, who knew you could get a 4'x8' sheet of that stuff! I guess the cheesy faux 50's diners have to get it from somewhere...

Thankyouthankyou so much for the link!

I have an office closet. :) I painted it dark purple so it's moody and cavelike though. It doesnt get much natural light so a pale color would have been dingy and depressing. The Ikea Mikael desk was exactly the perfect size to roll into it :D and I put in a shelf for my printer. I'm not satisfied with it, but it served its purpose and I am moving soon anyway.

I didn't *really* have a closet to spare, but I made more storage space by setting up a bed with 36" clearance underneath, TONS of space there!

Oh man this is awesome, I'm planning to paint my kitchen (blackplash) applegreen and (walls) teal in shades similar to the last picture. The room doesn't get much light so I figured I'll go with loud! crazy! colors!

I have orange cookware as well... bwahaha

I found a clear floor wax that works specifically for vinyl tiles at Ace Hardware (its Ace brand), it seems like it would probably help a cheap floor last a bit longer.

Aaaah thanks so much for the responses, but I went to Home Depot tonight and found ceramic tiles on sale for 99cents/sqft! I can have a real floor after all WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

:D

This is a really weird question... but I'm moving soon and I want to do a really quick and simple makeover to the new place's grody kitchen. It has a gross peeling-up vinyl floor and I can't afford to replace it with anything nice for the time being.

I'd like to get some vinyl stick-on floor tiles but my neighbor tells me they don't last very long, about a year or so? Would it be possible to coat it with a polyurethane or floor wax of some sort in order to seal it, make the gaps between the tiles "stick" more, and make it more durable and water resistant?

Or if anyone has a better idea for replacing the floor (its 35 sq ft), it has to cost less than $50 though ;)
