The easiest way to make a sling is to take a sarong (or a piece of fabric) and tie it in a tight knot. The knot goes in the place near your collarbone where the rings would go. I did this for a "summer sling" after having gotten used to a padded ring sling. You may have to adjust the knot a few times, but other than that, it is easy, and free, if you have an unused sarong hanging around, like I did.

As for hurting your back, I found the sling was better for my back than my baby bjorn. I still use the sling now sometimes (DD is 20 mos./26 lbs) but had to stop using the bjorn at around 10 mos.

I also cloth diaper. Mostly for economical reasons.
I purchased most of my diapers from www.thanksmama.com
I use chinese prefolds with a snappi and the prorap classic diaper covers.
We are fortunate to have a big bathroom with a perfect space for the changing table, with a diaper pail next to it.
When my daughter was tiny, we put the diapers directly into the pail (no rinsing) in a $1 laundry bag from the $ store.
Now that she is bigger, poops go in the toilet, and the rest still goes in the pail.

When the pail is full, I wash like this:
1. "quick wash" no detergent, cold
2. (Overnight) soak, ~1/2 c baking soda.
3. Hot wash with detergent and baking soda if I feel like, vinegar rinse.
4. Dry in dryer (NO dryer sheets, these prevent absorption)

As for smells, we found these at Bed Bath and Beyond, and have one in the diaper pail, and all our garbage cans. They really work!

Make sure the walker doesn't roll too easily, or it will be hard for a new walker not to fall down if they lean on it. The one we have was given to us by my sister, but I really liked it because you could adjust tension on the wheels, so it would not roll out from under my daughter.

I got the swiffer as a gift. I do not buy the refills, but just use a barely damp rag (hubby's old socks fit perfectly). This picks up the dust left behind by the broom or vacuum on our hardwood floors perfectly, and doesn't generate any trash.

Target also has some pretty basic cribs around $100. We bought the simplicity Aspen, and are very happy with it. There are plenty of simple cribs to be found and if you match the color (wood or painted) I think that is the more important thing anyway.
BTW Target does seem to carry some modern looking cribs, and I think Ikea does too.

I think it would be more authentic if the child had done the drawings, not the parents. My vote is messy and weird.

FYI,
I made an easy summer sling by tying a sarong together at the ends. I can adjust the tension, and cross it over my shoulder to make it tighter just like in the picture. Slings don't have to be expensive! I spent maybe $10 and have gotten many compliments.

Our daughters walls are a sky blue, with white clouds painted on them (using white paint and glaze with a rag)

I bought the Bristol Sofa they have at Dania about 6 months ago. It is the only smallish sectional we could find in our price range. The standard size seems to be about 20 inches longer, which would not fit in our living room.

It is pretty versatile, as it has simple lines, but we ordered it in brown, and it fits in well in our not so contemporary apt.
It is also very comfortable and we were assured that NHF has never had anyone complain about the quality.

We did not end up buying it from Dania, but from Northern Home Furnishings in Lincoln Square. They were able to give us a better price, and we felt better buying from a local store than from a west coast chain.
