I do the same as VJ. Living near Elliott Bay Book Company gives me the best perusing. And a friend who's an avid reader with an amazing personal library. I just follow his reading lists and his blog "What Not to Read"

I visited a sleep doctor today due to long-term insomnia problems. He referred me to CBTforInsomnia.com so I plan to try that.

Aside from ping-ponging among different medications (and working to get rid of them altogether), lately I have been using Brian Eno's iPhone app "Bloom" which plays very deep ambient random loops. You can also make your own music with it by touching the screen. I just use the default and turn the volume down (no headphones) and it seems to be helping.

I may wake up with a dead phone but it's better than being dead tired from no sleep.

I did this last year with a Lack unit from Ikea. I bought it from a guy on Craig's List for $50 and he delivered. It's been the best media center ever and has held up really well.

If putting small holes through the wall isn't an issue, I would recommend installing a shelf like this one

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=144210-46958-0194160&detail=cr&lpage=none

and setting the speakers on the shelf with a simple decorative element in between, such as a vase or potted plant. Drill small holes through the sheetrock or plaster to inside the closet and feed their wires through the holes and tack them down inside the closet for a clean look. Lowe's carries variations on that shelf; this is the only online link their site offers though.

Turn the speakers so they lie down lengthwise rather than stand up. This lowers their profile. Putting them on the shelf above the door also lifts the sound, spreading the speakers apart enough so you get good sound quality and keeps them out of underfoot.

But I agree with other posters that you should upgrade to a more compact set just for the sake of profile. And tiny speakers these days sound amazing if you buy the right ones.

I just adopted a cocker spaniel about a week ago who's a rescue from a puppy mill. He's adorable and adjusting quickly.

I have had cockers before and knew about their personality traits (very loving and loyal but they get very emotionally attached and quickly). Robbie hooked on to me the same day I got him, and once we got home he acted as if he'd been here all his life.

My experience and advice is whatever breed you select, be sure you can meet the needs of that individual dog. Find out all you can about him or her as an individual beforehand. For example, the rescue woman told me he was used to being in his crate but he wasn't at all. I've spent this whole week teaching him to use the crate for feeding, etc., because he has serious separation anxiety issues (whining, scratching at the door and barking loudly when I leave) and I don't want to treat him chemically or negatively (i.e, punishment). I don't want to be "that" neighbor, nor do you.

The separation anxiety has been the biggest issue so far but otherwise he's a great dog, smart and learns quickly and I'm very focused on assertively training him consistently right now because I'm off work and have the time. When I return to work I know he'll be ok all day on his own in the crate. Once I get him adjusted and mold his behavior to be the way we all want our dogs to act (i.e., not jumping on people, not going toilet indoors, etc.), then I may get him a playmate.

Meanwhile we're having a good time playing at the park - a dog is a GREAT way to meet people - and he keeps me company.

My advice: make sure you know what you need to do to be happy with your dog so he/she will be happy, too.

Henrybuilt offers really beautiful woodwork. The feel of it just exudes quality. Definitely a design aficionado highlight. I think their kitchens start at $18k, too.

The best solution I have found is the Wiremold kits at Lowe's in the audio/video section. It includes elbows and corners to go around corners. About $10. I think you can buy these online, too. Really quick and easy.

It's a white 5' plastic stick that is paintable. It also has a peel and stick backing that is sticky enough to solidly stay in place. Clean the wall first though. With a strong pair of scissors or a steak knife you can trim the stick, too.

It has a slit up the side to feed the cord into if you don't drop it through the opening up top first.

I also found a flat version that is on a spool. You cut to length what you need, fold along the creases to form the channel and use remove the paper to reveal the sticky that seals the unit into a rectangular channel. It was about $8 for a 20' roll I think.

Search online for Wiremold as the manufacturer for these types of products. Also try "cord concealer" and "channel"

I used to get Jehovah's Witnesses, kids wanting to rake my lawn or mow it, and one woman who actually hit me up for money, claiming she was 6 months pregnant and spent the night outside the night before. She was obviously not pregnant, and recognizing a scam I gave her nothing.

The next morning I found the little triangular window in the rear passenger door of my car busted, the glove compartment open and disarrayed and my spare change gone. It was an edgy neighborhood, what can I say.

After that I put up a small sign by the doorknob: "I can rake my own yard, I don't care about your religion and I don't want what you're buying. Please do not disturb."

People quit bugging me but my friends found it amusing.

Why do I picture these people as characters in a Wes Anderson film set 10 years hence? Anjelica Houston plays the disaffected wife who realized she missed all her things & comforts, and bought a foreclosed McMansion in suburbia (including a free, repo'd Hummer to seal the deal), using all the money they earned but never spent during their possession-free life?

Are they really gaining anything or just doing what's trendy now?

Wow...I've already used the Enticing Red (Luscious from Behr) for an accent wall in the living room and Eye Catching (Galley Gold from Behr) in the bedroom in my new place. And that was before seeing the post. Closest I came to Gauntlet Gray was a light shimmery sterling from Ralph Lauren for the bathroom to go with white and black tiles and chrome fixtures (the developer went for a retro 1940s feel in the renovation).

I agree about the browns but you can't toss furniture. Is any one else on here sick of wenge/espresso though? It's been done to death, I think.

I remember once seeing an idea on here for adapting pre-built cabinets (such as for media storage or nightstands maybe?) that people had converted to fit underneath a pedestal sink in the bathroom.

It created the look of a sink bowl sitting atop a cabinet and gave you storage.

I just bought a condo with a pedestal sink in the bathroom and no storage in the room. I'd like to try this.

Does any one have any links or ideas of how to do this?

Thanks.
